Behind the record-breaking play of junior
Alex Hicks (Cape May Court House, N.J.), the William and Mary men's golf team finished third Tuesday at the 11-team Joe Agee Invitational. The Tribe shot 286 (+2) in the final round at the Williamsburg Club, finishing at 862 (+10) overall. James Madison had three players finish the week at par or better, and claimed a one-stroke victory over Towson 851 (-1) to 852 (E). The Tribe's 54-hole total of 10-over is the fifth-best score in school history.
Hicks, who set the Tribe record for best 36-hole score yesterday with his 132 (-10), shot a 67 (-5) Tuesday to sew up his first individual medal and win by seven strokes with his tournament-record 199 (-14). En route to his first career win, Hicks also hit his first collegiate hole-in-one, acing the 170-yard No. 5. It was the third ace in school history, following hole-in-ones by
Frank Graven '30 in 1928 and by
John Henry '99 at the 1996 Campbell Invitational. Hicks' score ties the school record for a 54-hole tournament, previously set by
Brent Paladino '09 at the 2008 Raines Development Intercollegiate, and it is the first time that a Tribe golfer has ever broken the 200-stroke barrier.
Joining Hicks on the Tribe's scoring team was freshman
Davis Morrison (Charlotte, N.C.), who finished his week with an even-par 71 to tie for 10th overall at 218 (+5). Senior
Tanner Taddeo (Hendersonville, Tenn.) shot a 74 Tuesday to finish one stroke back in a tie for 12th, and freshman
Lucca Horwitz (Surrey, England) had a 74 of his own in the third round to improve to a tie for 39th at 228 (+15) overall. Senior
Nick Schafer (Arlington, Va.) rounded out the team effort in a tie for 49th, shooting 77 Tuesday and 230 for the week.
Competing as individuals were five more Tribe golfers. Junior
Joey Shroyer (Victoria, Minn.) also tied for 10th, finishing up with a 74 (+3) for 218 overall, and freshman
Austin Morrison (Charlotte, N.C.) tied for 12th at 219 (+6), shooting 76 in the final round. Junior
Charlie Kern (Seattle, Wash.) had an even-par 71 to close out the week, and tied for 23rd at 221 (+8), while senior
Patrick Leisure (Charlottesville, Va.) had a 78 Tuesday to stand at 224 and tied for 29th. Senior
Michael Bekken (Blacksburg, Va.) finished off the individuals with another 78, and tied for 49th overall at 230 (+17).
