TOWSON, Md. - The
William and Mary women's soccer team cruised past Towson, 5-0, Sunday afternoon
from the Towson Soccer Complex. After
building a 2-0 first-half lead, the College tallied three more scores in final
45 minutes en route to the victory.
Overall, the Tribe improves to 9-3 on the season and 3-0 in CAA play,
while the Tigers fall to 1-10-1 on the year and 1-3 in league action.
"We played very well and were extremely creative this
afternoon," stated head coach John Daly. "There was good opportunism from
Cortlyn (Bristol) and Mallory (Schaffer) to give us the lead. We combined for some fine attacking play
throughout. I was very pleased with the
way we played."
Senior Cortlyn Bristol connected on the game-winner just
eight minutes into the match. The
Chantilly, Va., native slipped her fourth goal of the season past Towson's
sophomore keeper Erin Quinn. The Tribe's
second score of the afternoon culminated when senior Mallory Schaffer blasted
in an assist from Bristol and junior Dani Rutter. It was Schaffer's team-high eighth goal of
the season. The College dominated the
opening 45-minutes, taking 10 shots with eight coming on frame. The Green and Gold's back line was stout,
limiting Towson to just four shots with only one coming on goal.
Freshman Samantha Cordum scored her first collegiate goal in
the 59th minute, as the Boise, Idaho, native put the College ahead, 3-0. Cordum tallied W&M's third score of the
afternoon after dribbling a throw in from classmate Nicole Baxter through
Towson's defense en route to registering the netter. In the 82nd minute, the Green and Gold
stretched the advantage to 4-0 when junior Audrey Barry was on the receiving
end of freshman Lauren Gough's assist.
The goal was Barry's second of the season, while the helper marked
Gough's first career points. Senior
Jackie Blake-Hedges produced the final margin of 5-0 after punching home a free
kick in the 88th minute. The goal was Blake-Hedges first career, while junior
Kiersten Harpe was credited with her second assist of the season.
For the match, the College registered 25 shots with 17
coming on frame, while Towson tallied nine attempts, which included three on
goal. Tribe freshman keeper Caroline Casey recorded her sixth shutout of the
season thanks in part to the defensive efforts of junior Ali Heck, sophomore
Emily Fredrikson, freshman Leci Irvin and Harpe. Sunday afternoon's win pushed the Tribe's
all-time record against Towson to 9-0-2.
