WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - After
defeating Old Dominion on Saturday afternoon, the William and Mary baseball
team dropped two contests to the Monarchs Sunday afternoon at Plumeri Park. In
the seven-inning affair game that was game one, W&M's tying run was thrown
out at the plate in the bottom of the seventh, as ODU squeaked past the Tribe,
2-1. In game two, the Green and Gold
led, 4-3, after four innings of play, but ODU scored six unanswered runs en
route to the, 9-4, win. The setbacks drop the College to an overall record of
28-20 and a CAA ledger of 11-13, while Old Dominion improves to 18-28 on the
year and 8-16 in league action.
Game 1 (7)
At the plate, junior second baseman Kevin Nutter went
1-for-3 with an RBI to lead W&M.
Freshman right fielder Josh Smith tallied one hit and a run scored,
while senior catcher Chris Forsten recorded a hit. Rounding out the Tribe output was senior
designated hitter Sean Aiken and sophomore third baseman Ryan Lindemuth, who
each notched a hit.
Senior RHP Matt Davenport (6-4) took the loss but pitched a
solid game, surrendering just one earned run, while striking out 11 Monarchs in
all seven innings of work. Old
Dominion's senior RHP Ben Tomchick (3-4) earned the victory, allowing one earned
run in six innings of action.
Old Dominion got on the scoreboard first as it plated a pair
of runs in the opening frame. With two
outs, junior first baseman Austin McGowan plated senior left fielder Chris
Baker with a single to right field.
Senior designated hitter Josh Tutwiler scored ODU's second run of the
inning from third on a W&M past ball.
W&M cut the ODU lead down to 2-1 as it pushed across a
run in the bottom half of the sixth.
Smith started the inning with a leadoff single through the middle of the
infield. Nutter followed with a double
down the right field line, which plated Smith for the College's first run of
the afternoon.
In the bottom of the seventh, Aiken led off the inning with
a single to center field. Freshman J.T. Castner then substituted for Aiken as a pinch runner. With no outs, junior center fielder Ryan
Brown moved Castner into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. After ODU recorded the frame's second out,
Forsten ripped a single into left field, and in an attempt to score the game-tying
run from second, Castner was thrown out at home from left field to end the
contest.
Game 2 (9)
Junior shortstop Ryan Williams went 2-for-4 with two RBIs
and a run scored to lead the Tribe bats.
Senior designated hitter Sean Aiken tallied two hits and two runs scored. Senior catcher Chris Forsten and junior
second baseman Kevin Nutter each recorded two hits, while freshman first baseman
Michael Katz finished the contest with a hit and a run scored.
Senior LHP Cole Shain (5-3) took the loss in his 4.1 innings
of work. Junior LHP Matt Wainman worked
3.2 innings of relief, surrendering just one earned run, while striking out
three. ODU's junior reliever RHP Brandon
Smith (8-1) earned the victory as he pitched 4.1 innings of relief, allowing no
runs on just three hits.
The Tribe struck first with a run in the second inning. Aiken led off the frame with a single through
the left side. He later advanced to
third after a failed pickoff attempt from ODU's starting RHP pitcher freshman Greg
Tomchick. With two outs, Aiken scored
the College's first run as he scored on a Tomchick wild pitch.
ODU responded with three runs in the top half of the
third. With the bases loaded, junior
first baseman Austin McGowan cleared the bases with a double to left field,
giving the Monarchs a 3-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Green and Gold scored a
trio of runs as it regained the advantage at 4-3. Katz got the three-run frame started with a
one out single through the left side.
Aiken followed with a single through the right side, which moved Katz to
second. With two outs, Williams drove in
the pair after he belted a double that rolled to the left center field wall.
Old Dominion went back ahead, 5-4, by scoring a run in top
of the fifth. Senior second baseman
Brandon Shelton drove in senior designated hitter Josh Tutwiler on a sacrifice
fly to right field.
In the top of the sixth, the Monarch's extended its lead to
7-4 after plating a pair of runs in the frame.
The Monarchs added two insurance runs in the top half of the
ninth, pushing its lead to the final score of 9-4.
The College returns to action on Thursday, May 10, as it
plays hosts to UNCW in a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series. Thursday's first pitch from Plumeri Park is
