WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The
William and Mary baseball team fell to Northeastern in its 2012 Colonial
Athletic Association debut, 8-0, Friday afternoon from Plumeri Park. The loss snapped the College's seven-game
winning streak and dropped to 9-6 overall and 0-1 in CAA play, while
Northeastern improved to 6-3 on the year and 1-0 in league action.
Junior shortstop Ryan Williams went 2-for-3 to lead the
Tribe offensively, while fellow classmate second baseman Kevin Nutter posted a
1-for-3 outing. Senior left fielder
Tadd Bower and sophomore third baseman Ryan Lindemuth each recorded a stolen
base in the setback.
Senior southpaw Cole Shain (1-2) took the loss in four
innings of work. Freshmen LHP Jason Inghram and RHP J.T. Castner combined to pitch five innings of relief, allowing
just one earned run. Inghram fanned five
Huskies while Castner held the NU bats hit-less in his one inning of action. Northeastern's
LHP Ryan Leenhout's (2-0) was impressive as he pitched a complete game shutout
en route to his second victory of the season.
Northeastern struck first with a pair of runs in the top of
the second. After plating one run, an
Aaron Barbosa RBI single through the left side put across the Huskie's second
run of the frame.
In the top half of the third, Northeastern scored two more
runs and pushed its advantage to 4-0.
The inning was highlighted by a Jason Volser solo home run to right
field. NU tacked on two more runs in the
top of the fourth, extending its lead to 6-0 through four innings of play.
W&M threatened in the bottom half of the sixth after
junior center fielder Ryan Brown laced a two-out double down the right field
line. However, the came to a close with
Brown stranded at second.
With the score 6-0 in the top of the seventh, NU plated two
insurance runs as it extended its cushion to 8-0. In the bottom half of the frame the College
once again positioned a player into scoring position. This time, Bower stole second and was poised
to score the Green and Gold's first run of the game. With one out and Bower on second, the Tribe
was unable to plate the senior standout as another opportunity was closed. In the bottom of the ninth, Northeastern went
on to secure the 8-0 win.
The Tribe returns to action tomorrow as its
plays Northeastern in game two of its three-game set from Plumeri Park. The first pitch from Williamsburg is
