Tribe Baseball Completes Sweep of NYIT

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The William and Mary baseball team completed its four-game sweep of NYIT Sunday afternoon with a 9-1 victory at Plumeri Park.  The win improves W&M's record to 7-5 overall, while NYIT falls to 0-4 on the season.

Senior Matt Davenport (2-0) was outstanding on the bump, pitching a complete game and only allowing one run while striking out six.  NYIT's Michael Auriemmo (0-1) pitched five innings in the loss.

Sophomore third baseman Ryan Lindemuth went 3-for-5 and tied a career-high with four RBIs to lead the Tribe offensively.  Freshman right fielder Josh Smith continued to impress with a 1-for-3 performance that included an RBI.  Junior center fielder Ryan Brown's solid outing comprised of two hits and three runs scored.   As a team, the Tribe recorded 10 hits in the Sunday afternoon affair.

As it had done all series, W&M struck first with a trio of runs in the bottom of the first.  With junior lead-off man Kevin Nutter on second and Brown on first, Lindemuth connected on a double to right center that plated Nutter for the game's first run.  After freshman Michael Katz' sacrifice fly to right field made the score 2-0 W&M, Smith plated the College's third run of the inning with another sacrifice fly, this time to center field to bring in Lindemuth.

NYIT answered right back with a run in the top half of the second.  Designated hitter T.R. Waskiewicz's two-out RBI single to left field got the Bears on the scoreboard and made the score 3-1 in favor of W&M.

In the third, the Tribe started to pull away from the Bears with two runs in the frame.  Brown led the inning off with a single through the left side, and scored when Lindemuth ripped a double to right field.  With one out and Lindemuth on third, designated hitter junior Sean Aiken plated him with a deep sacrifice fly to right field.  After three innings of play the College owned a 5-1 advantage.

For the rest of the game, Davenport held the NYIT offensive attack silent as he fanned six NYIT batters.  Offensively, the Tribe managed to tack on an insurance run in the fifth and three more in the eighth en route to the 9-1 series sweep.

The College will take its five-game winning streak to Lexington, Va., on Tuesday, March 6th as it faces in-state foe VMI for the second time in a week.  On Tuesday, February 28th, W&M defeated VMI 10-2 in Williamsburg.  The first pitch in Lexington is scheduled for 4 p.m.
