WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The
William and Mary baseball team fell to Towson, 2-1, Friday night from Plumeri
Park. In a hard fought pitchers duel, W&M's ninth inning rally wasn't enough as the Tigers escaped game one with the
one run victory. With the loss, the College
falls to 17-11 overall and 5-5 in CAA play, while Towson improves to 13-12 on
the year and 7-3 in league action.
Senior RHP Matt Davenport (4-2) took the loss, but was
outstanding under the lights. The Chesapeake,
Va., native pitched 8.1 innings, allowing only two earned runs while notching
eight strikeouts. Towson's junior RHP
Michael Trionfo (5-1) earned the victory, as he worked six innings,
surrendering no runs on five strikeouts.
Senior's LHP Cole Shain and RHP Jay McCarthy combined to pitch 0.2
innings of relief. The pair allowed no
run and no hits.
Senior left fielder Stephen Arcure continued his strong
play, as he went 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Green and Gold. Junior second baseman Kevin Nutter was
2-for-4 with a stolen base, while freshman right fielder Josh Smith also posted
a 2-for-4 effort. Rounding out the
W&M output was senior designated hitter Tadd Bower, who notched a run scored.
Towson struck first with a run in the top of the
fourth. Sophomore designated hitter
Dominic Frantantuono drove in sophomore right fielder Brandon Gonenlla with a
double to right center field, giving the Tigers an early 1-0 lead.
Maintaining its slim 1-0 margin throughout, Towson pushed
its lead to 2-0 with a run in the top half of ninth. Sophomore third baseman Zach Fisher gave the
Tigers a two run advantage after he plated classmate Kurt Wertz from third, on
a sacrifice fly to right field.
Trailing 2-0 and down to its last three outs, the College
staged one final rally. Bower started
off the frame drawing a walk, and then tagged up to second base on a warning
track fly out off the bat of freshman first baseman Michael Katz. With two outs and Bower on second, Arcure
pushed across W&M's first run of the game with a single up the middle,
making the score 2-1 in favor of Towson.
Smith then advanced Arcure into scoring position after his single landed
in left field. With runners on first and
second, and the momentum on its side, W&M was unable to complete the ninth
inning comeback as Towson retired the next batter.
Tribe baseball returns to action tomorrow, as it continues
its series against Towson. The first
pitch from Plumeri Park is scheduled for 4 p.m.
