WILLIAMSBURG, Va.
- The William and Mary baseball team fell to Rhode Island, 4-3, in the second
game of Saturday's doubleheader.
However, the College closed its opening three-game homestand with a 2-1
series win over URI. W&M opens the
year with a record of 2-1, while Rhode Island begins the season at 1-2.
In game two of Saturday's doubleheader, freshmen starting
pitcher Jason Inghram (0-1) showed signs of his talent, but took the loss after
allowing four earned runs in fours innings of work. Seeing action for the first time this season
were senior relief pitchers Jay McCarthy and Cole Shain, who combined to pitch
five scoreless innings.
Rhode Island's starting pitcher Anthony Pisani (1-0) notched
the win. Pisani allowed two earned runs
on six hits, in five innings of action.
Sophomore third baseman Ryan Lindemuth led the Tribe
offensively and went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while senior left-fielder Tadd Bower also notched two hits, including a double to center field in the bottom
of the third. Junior shortstop Ryan Williams and sophomore designated hitter Devin White each drove in a run for
the Tribe.
Rhode Island got on the scoreboard early with two runs in
the top of the first. The first URI run
came on a wild pitch, which plated Rams center fielder Jeff Roy. Rhode Island right fielder Greg Annarummo
drove home shortstop Mike Lebel for the innings second run.
W&M answered with a run in the bottom of the second
after William's plated pinch runner Sean Aiken with a sacrifice bunt. URI added to its lead in the top half of the
fifth with a pair of runs, extending its advantage to 4-1. The Green and Gold matched URI's two run
fifth with two-runs of its own in the bottom of the frame. White's deep fly ball to center field was
deep enough for Lindemuth to tag home from third. Later on in the fifth, freshmen Michael Katz
scored on a passed ball, cutting the URI lead to, 4-3.
In the bottom of the seventh the Tribe threatened to tie the
contest. Lindemuth led the inning off
with a single to left field. A batter
later, Katz advanced Lindemuth to second with a groundout to third. With one out and Lindemuth on second, W&M
was unable to plate the tying run, and Rhode Island held on for the victory,
4-3.
The College returns to play Tuesday, Feb. 21, as it travels
to Charlottesville, Va., to face the Virginia Cavaliers. First pitch from Davenport Field is scheduled
for 3 p.m.
