WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The
William and Mary Tribe women's soccer team extended its season-opening unbeaten
streak to five matches, tying the Villanova Wildcats on Sunday afternoon,
2-2. With the tie, the Tribe wins the
2011 Nike Tribe Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott Invitational by goal
differential. With the draw, W&M's
record on the season moves to 4-0-1, while Villanova goes to 4-0-2.
Freshman Emory Camper continued her fantastic start to her
William and Mary career, earning tournament MVP. With another goal against the Wildcats on
Sunday, Camper finished the tournament with three goals. Senior Diana Weigel had a goal and an assist
on Sunday to earn all-tournament team honors, while sophomore Audrey Barry also
had a helper. Sophomore Dani Rutter and
freshman Emily Fredrikson were also named to the all-tournament team.
The Wildcats were the first team to get on the board on a
hot, humid Sunday afternoon in Williamsburg.
With possession, VU's Heidi Sabatura slipped a pass towards a slashing
Stephanie Myers, who finished from seven yards out to give Villanova a 1-0
advantage.
Answering back for the College was Weigel, who made a
terrific, individual play to tie the match at 1-1. After the ball deflected back to her on the
left side, Weigel darted towards the 18-yard box. Weigel then circled back, making a spin move
to find space and fired a shot towards goal with her left foot. Weigel, well placed, low shot beat the Villanova
keeper, giving the senior her first goal of the season.
In the 33rd minute, the Tribe used great teamwork to take
the lead over Villanova. With the Tribe
on the attack, Weigel sent a great pass to Barry, who was making a run along
the right side. Barry then found an open
Camper in the middle of the box who then cracked a wonderful shot on goal with
her left foot from just outside the box.
The Villanova goalie had no chance, as Camper gave the Green and Gold
the lead, 2-1, headed in to halftime.
At the break, the College had out-shot Villanova, 8-, with
the Tribe getting am impressive six of those on goal. The Wildcats had two attempts on frame in the
first 45 minutes.
Twelve minutes in to the second half, the Wildcats evened
the match on a goal from Katie Ryan, who scored on a breakaway off a feed from
Stephanie Myers. After 57 minutes of
play, the match was tied, 2-2.
From that point on, the story of the match for William and
Mary would be missed offensive opportunities, as the College controlled the
bulk of possession. For the rest of the
match, the Tribe out-shot the Wildcats, 14-6, but they were unable to get the
winning score in regulation or overtime.
For the match, the Tribe's offensive prowess was shown in
the shots taken and shots on goal. On
Sunday, the College out-shot the Wildcats, 25-16, with William and Mary getting
an amazing 12 shots on goal to eight for Villanova. Junior Erin Liberatore led the team with six
shots, getting two on goal, while classmate Cortlyn Bristol took five attempts,
also getting two on frame.
With the 2-2 draw, the Tribe has started the
2011 season with a 4-0-1 record, marking the third time in program history that
the College has started the season unbeaten through five games. W&M started last season unbeaten through
six matches, while the 2001 team went undefeated through seven games to start
the year.
The William and Mary Tribe women's soccer team will return
to action on Thursday, September 8 when the College hits the road to play the
