WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The
William and Mary Tribe women's soccer team won its fourth straight match on
Thursday night, beating the Georgia State Panthers, 3-0, at Martin Family
Stadium at Albert-Daly Field. With the
win, the Tribe improves its record on the season to 8-1-2 and to a perfect 3-0
in CAA conference play. With the loss,
the Panthers fall to 4-8 on the year and to 1-2 in league action.
Junior Mallory Schaffer scored the game-winning goal for the
College, while classmate Erin Liberatore and sophomore Audrey Barry also netted
goals for W&M. Recording assists on
the night were junior Cortlyn Bristol and freshmen Aly Shaughnessy and Emory
Camper. In goal, junior keeper Katherine Yount made three saves in recording her sixth shutout of the season.
The Tribe jumped on the board first in the 11th minute. With possession in the middle of the pitch,
Shaughnessy played a great through ball down the right side to a streaking
Schaffer. With just the GSU keeper to
beat, Schaffer finished beautifully, finishing to the lower left corner for her
team-leading ninth goal of the season.
Just over eight minutes later, the College was on the
scoreboard again after a confusing play near the Georgia State goal. After a Panther turnover, the Tribe was on the
attack. Bristol fired a hard shot from
the right side, not allowing the GSU keeper to hold the ball. Liberatore was there for the rebound and took
a shot that appeared dribble across the goal line. Georgia State kept playing, but in trying to
clear the ball, knocked the ball in to the net.
With confusion running rampant on the field, the referees got together
and declared that Liberatore's shot did indeed cross the line, giving the
junior her third goal of the season.
With the score 2-0, William and Mary continued to press the
Panthers on the offensive end, and in the 41st minute, came away with their
third and final goal of the match. After
taking the ball from GSU, Camper played a magnificent, 40-yard pass from the
left side of the pitch to a darting Barry.
Now in the clear, Barry beat the Georgia State keeper with a shot to the
far post, recording her first goal of the season.
For the remainder of the match, the Green and Gold continued
to press the issue on offense. For the
game, the Tribe out shot the Panthers, 26-9, with the College getting 12 shots
on goal to just three for Georgia State.
With the 3-0 victory over the Panthers on Thursday night, the
Tribe moved to 3-0 in conference play.
Since the 1994 season, William and Mary has started the CAA conference
season 3-0 now 10 times, with the College earning a bid to the NCAA Tournament
eight times in the previous nine occasions.
The William and Mary Tribe women's soccer team will hit the
road this weekend to face the UNC Wilmington Seahawks on Sunday, October
2. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
