William and Mary volleyball put up two great fights Sunday in North Carolina, but ultimately fell at the hands of two veteran opponents on the unplanned road trip. Sunday morning, the Tribe fell to Kennesaw State, 3-1, and in the afternoon lost a tough five-set match to Appalachian State. Both matches were played at ASU.
In the Kennesaw State match, W&M hung tight in every set, winning the second 25-19 and forcing the first to extra points (25-27). Freshman
Liz Brown (Ellicott City, Md.) was the star of the morning session, hitting a match-high 15 kills on a .419 attack, and redshirt-freshman
Monika Stanciauskas (Wheaton, Ill.) had 10 kills on a .320 attack, while adding two aces and two blocks.
On the defensive side of the net, senior
Anne Dorff (Kent, Ohio) was a wall at the net with five blocks, two of them solo. Sophomore
Celine Alasomuka (Centreville, Va.) had a match-best 15 digs along with an ace and a rare kill, and redshirt-freshman
Devin Andrews-Lyssy (Santa Rosa, Calif.) also saw action at libero, collecting nine digs and a pair of aces. Junior
Molly Krull (Raleigh, N.C.) stepped into the setters role in the starting lineup, and had a career-high 36 assists to go with seven digs and a pair of aces.
The afternoon's match with Appalachian State saw the Tribe fall behind early with losses in the first two sets, but the young Green and Gold team rallied strongly to take sets three and four, 25-21 and 25-20. Unfortunately the fifth and final set would not go the Tribe's way, but not for lack of effort from the team that had played 13 sets already to that point in the weekend. As she had Friday night, freshman
Manon Murray (Greensboro, N.C.) led the way with nearly a 20-20 effort, scoring 20 kills on a .304 attack and adding 19 digs and three blocks. Brown was also in the thick of things again, with 12 kills and two blocks.
Also notable in the afternoon match, Stanciauskas continued her string of great attacking games with an eight-kill effort on a .368 attack, and matched Dorff with four blocks apiece.
Carolina Rivas (Orlando, Fla.) came off the bench in support of Krull at the setting spot, and dished out a commanding 45 assists to go with three aces and five digs. The libero duo of Alasomuka and Andrews-Lyssy were again effective on defense, collecting 26 digs and 10 digs, respectively, and adding an ace each. Redshirt-freshman
Paulette Grand Pre (Laguna Beach, Calif.) rounded out the notables, adding 12 digs of her own to the defensive effort.
William and Mary will return home for a day or two of rest this week, before heading back out on the road to take part in the Allstate Sugar Bowl Classic, hosted by Tulane University in New Orleans. The Tribe will face the Salukis of Southern Illinois on Friday, Sept. 2, at 6 p.m. Eastern (5 p.m. Central), before facing Tulane at 1 p.m. Eastern on Saturday and San Diego State at 6:30 p.m. Eastern.
