RICHMOND, Va. - The
William and Mary Tribe women's soccer team improved its record to 2-0 on the
season with a victory over Appalachian State on Saturday at the VCU
Tournament. With its 2-0 win over ASU,
the Tribe starts the season at 2-0 for the 14th time in school history. With the loss, the Mountaineers fall to 0-2
on the year.
Junior Kiersten Harpe scored the game-winning goal for the
Tribe in the first half, while sophomore Dani Rutter added another score in the
second to give the College its 2-0 win.
Freshman Emory Camper had an assist on Rutter's goal, her third helper
on the season. Junior Katherine Yount
posted another shutout, making two saves.
The back-to-back shutout victories to open the season marks the seventh
time in program history that the College has accomplished the feat.
After nearly scoring in the 14th minute off a corner kick,
Harpe got the Tribe on the scoreboard first off a set piece 25 minutes
later. On the College's fourth corner of
the first half, junior Cortlyn Bristol sent the ball in to the 18-yard
box. After the ball was knocked around,
Harpe settled it outside the box and drove a shot that beat the ASU keeper to
the top-left corner of the goal from 25 yards out. Harpe's first career goal gave W&M a 1-0
lead in the 39th minute.
With just under 90 seconds left in the half, the College
came within inches of adding another score to its total. On the attack, freshman Anna Madden hit the
post on a well-struck shot. In the first
half, the Tribe dominated possession, out-shooting the Mountaineers, 9-1. In the first 45 minutes, the Green and Gold
got four shots on-goal, while Appalachian State did not find the frame.
The College came out of the break and continued to look for
a second goal. In the 59th minute, the
Tribe found it. On a breakaway down the
left side of the pitch, Camper sent a through ball that found a streaking
Rutter down the left side of the pitch.
With just the ASU keeper to beat, Rutter took a great shot, firing the
ball past the goalie to the lower-right corner, giving W&M its winning
margin of 2-0.
For the game, the Tribe out-shot the Mountaineers,
19-3. On the season, the College has
out-shot its two opponents, 41-9.
Against Appalachian State on Saturday, the Tribe had eight corner kicks
and six shots on-goal.
The William and Mary Tribe women's soccer team will be in
action on Sunday, August 28, when the College will play the Marshall Thundering
Herd in the final match of the VCU Tournament.
The match is scheduled to start at 11:30 a.m.
