Williamsburg, Va. -
The
William and Mary Tribe baseball team dropped a doubleheader to the visiting
Longwood Lancers on Sunday at Plumeri Park.
Longwood won game one, 4-2, before taking game two of the doubleheader, 4-1. With the pair of losses, the Tribe's record
falls to 23-25 on the season while Longwood improves to 27-15 on the year.
Senior Logan Billbrough
had another solid start for the
Tribe in game one for the Tribe. The
senior pitched six strong innings, allowing just one run on five hits while
striking out eight and issuing just one walk.
In game one for the Tribe, senior Derrick Osteen
was 1-for-3
with a run scored while classmate Jonathan Slattery
had a RBI double for the
College. Junior Stephen Arcure
also had
a hit and scored a run.
In game two, the Tribe was led offensively by Slattery, who
went 3-for-4. Sophomore Ryan Brown
had a
RBI single for the College, while junior Tadd Bower
, and freshmen Devin White
and Bobby Klein
each had hits.
Sophomore Matt Wainman
had a good start for the College in
game two, pitching 4.2 innings. Wainman
allowed one unearned run while striking out three and walking two.
In the top of the first in game one, the Tribe took
advantage of a Longwood error to take an early, 1-0 lead over the Lancers. With one out and a runner on second, freshman
Ryan Lindemuth
hit a chopper up the middle.
The Longwood shortstop charged, but the ball would get under his glove
and trickle in to the outfield, allowing Osteen to score from second. After one complete, the Tribe led Longwood,
1-0.
The Tribe doubled its lead over Longwood in the second,
coming inches away from tripling its lead.
After Arcure led off the frame with a single, Slattery blasted a ball
deep to right field. The ball hit off
the top of the fence and bounced back in to play. The double scored Arcure from first, but
Slattery would be stranded at second, coming just a few inches away from his
third homer of the season. After two,
the College led the Lancers, 2-0.
After the first two innings, the Tribe's offense would go
stagnant. The Lancers scored one in the
fifth to cut the lead in half and then took the lead for good in the eighth
with a pair of runs. Longwood added an
insurance run in the top of the ninth to make the final score, 4-2, in favor of
the Lancers.
In game two of the doubleheader, the Lancers were the ones
to take an early lead, jumping out to a 1-0 advantage after scoring on a passed
ball in the top of the third inning.
The Tribe's offense came alive in the bottom of the fifth,
tying the game at 1-1. With two outs,
Osteen drew a walk to get on base for Slattery, who moved Osteen to third with
a single to left field. Up to the plate
stepped Brown, who hit a sharp grounder towards third. The Longwood third baseman dove to his right,
but the well-struck ball hit off his glove, allowing Osteen to score from
third. After five innings, the game was
tied, 1-1.
The game wasn't tied for long, however, as the Lancers took
the lead in the top of the sixth inning.
Longwood tacked on two more in the top of the seventh to stake a 4-1
lead headed to the bottom of the seventh.
In the bottom of the seventh, the College would get the
tying run to the plate after singles from both Klein and Slattery, but Brown
flew out to center to end the game, giving the Lancers the victory.
The William and Mary Tribe baseball team will return to CAA
action later this week when the College will play host to the Georgia State
Panthers in a three-game series at Plumeri Park. The series gets underway on Thursday, May 12,
with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m.
