Towson, Md. -
The
William and Mary Tribe baseball team staged a wild comeback in the ninth inning
and won the game in the 10th
, evening the series with the Towson
Tigers with a 5-4 win in extra innings.
With the win the College improves to 25-29 on the season overall and to
15-14 in the CAA. With the loss, Towson
falls to 26-27-1 on the year and to 15-14 in conference play.
In his final start of the season, senior Logan Billbrough
had yet another outstanding outing for the Tribe, pitching eight strong
innings. Billbrough allowed four runs,
two earned, while striking out eight Towson batters.
With his third strikeout of the game in the third inning,
Billbrough became just the third different pitcher in William and Mary to
record 100 strikeouts in a season.
Billbrough ends the year with 105 strikeouts, ranking him fourth
all-time on the single-season list.
At the plate, nine different Tribe players recorded a hit,
led by sophomore Ryan Brown
who went 3-for-5 with a run scored. Junior Tadd Bower
had a two-RBI single in the
ninth inning, while senior Derrick Osteen
also drove in a run and had a pair of
hits. Sophomore Ryan Williams
also had
two hits on the afternoon, including a double in the 10th
inning. Junior Sean Aiken
also had a RBI, driving in the
winning run in extra innings.
After a two scoreless innings to begin the game, the Tigers
jumped on the scoreboard first on Saturday afternoon, scoring a run on a Nick
Natoli RBI single. Towson tacked on a
pair of unearned runs in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead headed to the sixth
inning.
In the top of the sixth, the Tribe threatened, but came up
just short of scoring their first runs of the day. After a lineout to start the frame, Brown
singled up the middle to get on base. Osteen
followed, hitting a single to right field.
After a passed ball, the runners were on second and third for Bower. Bower was unable to cash in on the
opportunity, striking out. Senior
Jonathan Slattery
came up next, but also fell victim to the strikeout,
stranding a pair in scoring position.
After Towson scored another run in the bottom of the sixth
to take a 4-0 lead, the Tribe again put runners on base in the seventh. Williams
led off with a line-drive single to left and was joined on base by freshman
Ryan Lindemuth
after he drew a walk.
Towson's starting pitcher Chris Acker would buckle down there, however,
as he sat down the College in order to stem the rally.
With the game still 4-0, the Tribe came up needing a rally
in the top of the ninth. Williams drew a
walk to start the inning and quickly moved to third on a single off the bat of
Lindemuth. Freshman Devin White
got the
run in but it came at the expense of two outs as he hit in to a double play.
With the bases empty and two down, the Tribe staged one last
rally. Aiken single to left-center field to reach and was joined by classmate
Stephen Arcure
who singled to left.
Brown stepped to the plate and lined a base hit to the third baseman,
loading the bases for Osteen. After
fighting off numerous pitches, Osteen hit a soft ground ball to the shortstop,
beating the throw by a step to drive in the run, making the score 4-2 in favor
of Towson.
With the bases still loaded, Bower came to the plate looking
for some redemption. Swinging at the
first pitch, Bower made it five hits in a row for the Tribe, plating two runs
with a sharp single to center field. After
scoring three runs with two outs, the Tribe tied the game, 4-4. After a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth, the game
headed to extra innings.
In the top of the 10th
, the Tribe took its first
lead of the ballgame. Leading off,
Williams doubled down the left-field line.
After a wild pitch, Williams moved to third with nobody out. At the plate, Lindemuth lined out sharply to
left field, not deep enough to score the run from third. After White was hit by a pitch, runners were
on the corners for Aiken. On a 1-0
count, Williams took off from third on a suicide squeeze. Aiken laid down a great bunt, plating
Williams easily on the single. Headed to
the bottom of the 10th
, the Tribe clung to a 5-4 lead.
In the bottom of the 10th
, Koehler induced a pair
of flyouts before issuing a walk to bring the winning run to the plate. Not fazed, Koehler struck out Towson's Chris
Wychock to secure the wild, 5-4 win for the Tribe. Pitching a pair of shutout innings out of the
bullpen, Koehler earned the win to improve his record to 4-3 on the year.
Despite the great win, with other results around the CAA on
Saturday, the Tribe was eliminated from contention in the conference's
four-team tournament.
The William and Mary Tribe baseball team will wrap up the season
on Sunday, May 22, when the College will conclude its series with the Towson
Tigers. First pitch is scheduled for 1
p.m. at John B. Schuerholz Park.
