Raleigh, N.C. -
The
William and Mary Tribe baseball team dropped its final non-conference game of
the season on a rainy Tuesday night, falling to North Carolina State Wolfpack
on the road, 4-0. With the loss, the Tribe's
record falls to 24-28 on the season, while N.C. State improves to 30-23 on the
year. Despite, the loss, the Tribe's 10
road wins this season is the most for the College since the 2008 campaign.
Leading the way for the Tribe's offense were senior Derrick Osteen
and junior
Tadd Bower
. Osteen was
2-for-4 with a double, while Bower had a pair of singles for the Green and
Gold.
Tribe starter
Cole Shain
had a solid outing for the College,
pitching 6.2 innings, allowing four earned runs in the losing effort. The left-hander struck out two while walking
a pair.
In the top of the first it appeared as though the Tribe
would get on the board early, but were undone on the base paths. Despite getting a double from Osteen and
singles from sophomore
Ryan Brown
and Bower, the College would not score in the
frame as Brown was caught stealing and Bower was picked off of first.
In the bottom of the inning, the Wolfpack cashed in on its base
runner, as Pratt Maynard hit a two-run home run to right field to give N.C.
State a 2-0 lead at the end of the first.
With both pitchers going well, offense was at a premium for
both teams in the middle innings. In the
seventh, the Tribe had a great opportunity to score some runs but was unable to
push any across. After a one-out single from
freshman
Devin White
, both
Ryan Lindemuth
and sophomore
Kevin Nutter
were hit
by pitches to load the bases. But after
a strikeout and a groundout, the threat was over and the score remained 2-0 in
favor of North Carolina State.
N.C. State was able to push across a pair of runs in the bottom
of the seventh, scoring on a Chris Diaz RBI single and on a bases-loaded
walk. After seven complete, the Wolfpack
led the Tribe, 4-0.
In the eighth and ninth innings, the Tribe got a runner on
in each inning, but any potential rallies were cut short thanks to a pair of
double plays. North Carolina State took
the rainy game on Tuesday night, 4-0.
The William and Mary Tribe baseball team will hit the road
for the final regular season CAA series this weekend when the College will head
north to face the Towson Tigers. The
series gets underway on Friday, May 19, with the first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
