Boston, Mass. -
The
William and Mary Tribe baseball team snapped a three-game losing skid in a big
way on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Northeastern Huskies, 8-0, in
Boston. With the win, the Tribe improves
to 22-23 on the season and to 12-11 in CAA play. With the loss, the Huskies fall to 13-26 on
the year and to 8-12 in conference action.
The story of the game was the brilliance of Tribe senior
pitcher Logan Billbrough
, who tossed his second complete game shutout of the
season. Billbrough struck out an
astounding 16 Huskies on the afternoon, a William and Mary school
record. The 16 K's are the most for a
Tribe pitcher since Chris Shaver struck out 13 batters in a win over James
Madison on May 14, 2004.
In the win over the Huskies, Billbrough scattered seven hits
and walked just two batters. With the
victory, Billbrough pushes his record to 6-2 on the year with 77 strikeouts in
75.2 innings pitched.
Freshman Ryan Lindemuth
extended his hitting streak to six
games on Saturday, leading the Tribe with a 3-for-5 effort that included three
doubles, four RBIs, and two runs scored on the day. Over the course of his streak, Lindemuth is
13-for-28 (.464) with six doubles, eight RBIs, a home run, and five runs
scored.
Not to be outdone, sophomore Ryan Brown
went 3-for-4 on the
afternoon with two runs scored and two stolen bases. Brown has hit in five straight games for the
Tribe, going 10-for-18 (.556) with six runs scored and three stolen bases.
Junior Tadd Bower
had two hits and two RBIs in the Tribe's
win over the Huskies, while sophomores Derek Lowe
and Ryan Williams
also drove
in runs for the College.
Unlike the game on Friday, the Tribe was the team that
jumped out to an early lead on Saturday.
With two outs in the top of the first, Lindemuth doubled to left field
to put a runner in scoring position.
After a walk, Williams singled sharply to left field to plate Lindemuth
from second, giving the College a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the second, William and Mary again used some
two-out hitting to take a four-run lead over Northeastern. With two men on, Brown reached first on a
great bunt single to load the bases for Lindemuth. Once again, the freshman came through,
finding the gap in right-center field for a two-out, three-run double to clear
the bases. After two full innings, the
Tribe led the Huskies, 4-0.
After a scoreless fourth, W&M added another run to its
lead over Northeastern. After Williams
drew a walk to start the frame, freshman Devin White
blasted a ground-rule
double to left field that put runners on second and third. After a fielder's choice loaded the bases and
a fly out, Lowe grounded out to first base, scoring Williams from third for his
ninth RBI of the season. After five, the
Green and Gold led the Huskies, 5-0.
In the sixth, the College continued to add to its lead over
NU. After drawing a walk to start the
inning, Brown stole both second and third base to get in scoring position for
Lindemuth. The rookie continued his
great day, hitting his third double of the day down the left-field line,
plating Brown for his fourth RBI of the afternoon. Bower followed and promptly scored Lindemuth
from second with a RBI single to right center, giving the Tribe a 7-0
advantage.
The College scored for the third-consecutive frame in the
top of the seventh. With runners on the
corners, Bower singled to right field to plate the Tribe's eighth run of the
ballgame, giving the Green and Gold an 8-0 lead after seven.
With Billbrough rolling on the mound and the offense
clicking, the Tribe would even the series with the Northeastern Huskies with an
8-0 win on Saturday.
The William and Mary Tribe baseball team will conclude its
three-game series with the Northeastern Huskies on Sunday, May 1. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
