Williamsburg, Va.
- The William and Mary Tribe baseball team exacted some revenge on Longwood
Sunday at Plumeri Park, beating the visiting Lancers, 6-1. With the win, the Tribe improves its record
on the season to 18-16, while Longwood falls to 22-13 on the year.
Tribe senior pitcher Logan Billbrough
was once again the
story for the Tribe, as the Miami, Florida native threw his second complete game
of the season to improve his record to 4-1 on the year. Billbrough allowed one run on four hits,
while striking out six.
The story offensively for the Tribe was senior Jonathan
Slattery, who went 4-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs. Freshman Ryan Lindemuth
was 2-for-3 on the day
with a double, a RBI, and two runs scored, while senior Derrick Osteen
also had
a pair of hits. Junior Stephen Arcure
had two hits and scored twice while classmate Tadd Bower
drove in a run.
The Tribe wasted little time getting on the scoreboard on a
beautiful day in Williamsburg Sunday.
With one man on and one down, Slattery blasted a double off the wall in
left field, missing a two-run homer by three feet. After a walk to Devin White
, the bases were
loaded for Bower. On a 1-1 pitch, Bower
chopped a ball towards first that was snagged out of the air on a great defensive
effort by the Longwood first baseman. With
his only play at first, Lindemuth scored easily from third, giving the Tribe a
1-0 lead after the first inning.
In the second inning, the Tribe had the bases loaded with no
outs and came away with a run, doubling its lead over the Lancers. With the count full, Lindemuth lined out to
left field, plating Arcure who reached on a single through the left side. Lindemuth's 18th
RBI of the season
gave the College a 2-0 lead after two full.
The Green and Gold took advantage of a pair of Longwood
miscues to push across a run in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Arcure laced a double to left
field. On the throw back to the infield,
the Lancers' second baseman mishandled the catch, allowing Arcure to move to
third on the error. Three pitches later,
Arcure scored on a wild pitch, giving the Tribe a 3-0 lead after four innings.
The Tribe continued to add to its lead in the bottom of the
fifth. After a leadoff double from
Lindemuth, Osteen moved him to third on a bunt single down the third base
line. With runners on the corners,
Slattery singled to left, plating Lindemuth for a 4-0 lead after five complete
innings.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Tribe once again took
advantage of a Longwood error to score an unearned run. With two outs and runners on fist and second,
both Tribe runners took off on steal attempts.
Trying to catch the Lindemuth at second, the Lancers' catcher's throw
went awry, allowing Brown to score from third base, giving the Tribe a 5-0 lead
after six.
In the top of the seventh, the Lancers were able to push a
run across on Billbrough, ending the senior's scoreless inning streak at an
unbelievable 26 innings.
The College got its lead back to five runs in the bottom of
the eighth, when Slattery hit his second double of the day, scoring Brown from
second. The run came off of Longwood
reliever Mark Montgomery, who in his previous 21.2 innings had only surrendered
one run.
Billbrough did not allow his scoreless innings streak to
affect him, as he would cruise through the final two innings for his second
complete game of the season. On a
gorgeous day at Plumeri Park, the College defeated the Longwood Lancers, 6-1.
The William and Mary Tribe baseball team will next be in
action on Tuesday, April 12, when the College will play host to the West
Virginia Mountaineers. First pitch at
Plumeri Park is scheduled for 7 p.m.
