Williamsburg, Va. - The
William and Mary Tribe women's swimming and diving team fell in its final
dual-meet of the season on Saturday afternoon, dropping a tight meet to East
Carolina, 157-141, on Senior Day. With
the loss, the Tribe ends the regular season with a record of 7-6 overall.
Despite the setback, the Tribe swam well, led by junior
Hailey Hewitt who won a pair of individual events. Hewitt was again fantastic, winning the 200
back in a time of 2:02.40, a record for the Rec Center Pool. Hewitt also led a Tribe sweep of the 100 fly,
winning in a time of 57.70. With her two
wins, Hewitt moves up into a tie for fifth all-time at William and Mary with 59
career victories. Her 20 individual wins
this season were a team best.
Also claiming a pair of victories on the afternoon was
junior Molly Emery, who ends her dual-meet year with 16 wins, moving her into
10th place all-time at the College with 41 career individual
triumphs. Emery led a W&M sweep in
the 500 free, touching first in a time of 5:03.01. Emery also captured the 200 IM with a mark of
2:06.87.
Freshman Jennifer Bentley continued the Tribe's dominance in the
distance freestyle events, winning the 1,000 free in a time of 10:26.81. The College finished 1-2-3 in the event, the
third sweep for the Tribe women on the afternoon.
Also claiming individual wins for the Green and Gold were
sophomores Emily Bart and Kayla O'Malley.
Bart touched first in the 200 breast with a time of 2:23.16, while O'Malley
won the 200 fly with a mark of 2:06.95.
The Tribe ended the meet on a high note, winning the 200
free relay in impressive fashion. The team
of senior Emily Burns, freshman Sara Shaner, junior Liza McDevitt, and Emery
finished first in a time of 1:35.45, a Rec Center Pool record. Along with being a pool record, the time also
places the team seventh all-time in the event in school history.
The William and Mary Tribe women's swimming and diving team
will now turn its attention to the CAA Championships, which are less than three
weeks away. The three-day conference
meet gets underway on Thursday, February 24.
