- The William and Mary Tribe men's swimming and diving team came up just short
of the East Carolina Pirates on Senior Day Saturday afternoon, falling
159.5-138.5. With the loss, the Tribe's
dual-meet season comes to an end with a 5-5 mark.
Despite the defeat, the Tribe men had a handful of standout
performances in the pool on Saturday afternoon.
Leading the way was freshman Andrew Strait, who continued his terrific
rookie season. With his three victories,
Strait ends the dual-meet year with a team-best 10 wins.
Strait led all swimmers on the day with three victories, all
coming in personal-best times. Strait
started his great performance by winning the 100 breast in a time of 57.45, ranking
him fifth all-time in the event. Strait
then completed the sweep of the breaststroke events, winning the 200 with a
mark of 2:05.71, which places him fourth all-time in school history. Strait then capped his day by winning the 200
IM in a Rec Center Pool record time of 1:53.66.
With that impressive mark, Strait now ranks seventh all-time in W&M
history in the event.
Also having a great day in the pool for the Tribe was
sophomore Ben Ward, who notched a pair of individual wins. Ward won the 50 free in a personal-best time
of 21.12, before winning the 100 free with a mark of 46.96. The victories were the first two of the
season for the second-year swimmer who had four wins in 2009-10.
Sophomores Hunter Perrot and Kyle McVeigh also scored
individual wins for the Tribe. Perrot
touched the wall first in the 200 free with a time of 1:44.13, while McVeigh
won the 500 free with a mark of 4:42.37.
In the relays, the Tribe had a pair of notable performances,
led by a win in the 200 free relay. The
team of junior Stephen Fay, junior Jake Maloy, sophomore Sidney Glass, and Ward
won the final event of the afternoon with a time of 1:25.21. In the first event of the day, the 400 medley
relay, the team of Glass, Strait, junior Evan Mulloy, and Ward placed second in
a time of 3:25.95. With that mark, the
team ranks ninth all-time at the College in the event.
The William and Mary Tribe men's
swimming and diving team will now turn its attention to the CAA Championships,
which are less than three weeks away. The three-day conference meet gets
underway on Thursday, February 24.
