W&M Men?s Swimming and Diving Drops Meet to ECU

Williamsburg, Va. - The William and Mary Tribe men's swimming and diving team came up just short of the East Carolina Pirates on Senior Day Saturday afternoon, falling 159.5-138.5.  With the loss, the Tribe's dual-meet season comes to an end with a 5-5 mark.

Despite the defeat, the Tribe men had a handful of standout performances in the pool on Saturday afternoon.  Leading the way was freshman Andrew Strait, who continued his terrific rookie season.  With his three victories, Strait ends the dual-meet year with a team-best 10 wins.

Strait led all swimmers on the day with three victories, all coming in personal-best times.  Strait started his great performance by winning the 100 breast in a time of 57.45, ranking him fifth all-time in the event.  Strait then completed the sweep of the breaststroke events, winning the 200 with a mark of 2:05.71, which places him fourth all-time in school history.  Strait then capped his day by winning the 200 IM in a Rec Center Pool record time of 1:53.66.  With that impressive mark, Strait now ranks seventh all-time in W&M history in the event.

Also having a great day in the pool for the Tribe was sophomore Ben Ward, who notched a pair of individual wins.  Ward won the 50 free in a personal-best time of 21.12, before winning the 100 free with a mark of 46.96.  The victories were the first two of the season for the second-year swimmer who had four wins in 2009-10.

Sophomores Hunter Perrot and Kyle McVeigh also scored individual wins for the Tribe.  Perrot touched the wall first in the 200 free with a time of 1:44.13, while McVeigh won the 500 free with a mark of 4:42.37.

In the relays, the Tribe had a pair of notable performances, led by a win in the 200 free relay.  The team of junior Stephen Fay, junior Jake Maloy, sophomore Sidney Glass, and Ward won the final event of the afternoon with a time of 1:25.21.  In the first event of the day, the 400 medley relay, the team of Glass, Strait, junior Evan Mulloy, and Ward placed second in a time of 3:25.95.  With that mark, the team ranks ninth all-time at the College in the event.

The William and Mary Tribe men's swimming and diving team will now turn its attention to the CAA Championships, which are less than three weeks away.  The three-day conference meet gets underway on Thursday, February 24.
