Norfolk, Va. - Despite setting a Ted Constant Center record for 3-pointers made by an opponent, the William and Mary men's basketball team dropped its
regular season finale at Old Dominion, 77-58, on Saturday afternoon. Freshman guard Julian Boatner paced the Tribe
with 18 points and in the process set a pair of W&M freshman records. The
Tribe concludes the regular season at 9-21 overall and 4-14 in CAA play, while
ODU upped its mark to 24-6 on the year and 14-4 in conference action.
Boatner was 6-of-13 from 3-point range and equaled his
W&M rookie single game record for 3-pointers made. He also bettered the
freshman single season record pushing his total to 55. Jimmy Apple previously held the record of 51
set in 1988. Freshman guard Brandon Britt scored 15 points, including 7-of-9
from the free throw line, while pulling down three rebounds and dishing out two
assists compared to zero turnovers in 34 minutes. Junior forward Quinn McDowell
accounted for 14 points against the Monarchs and dished out a career-best five
assists.
Trailing 42-32 at the intermission, the Tribe got off to a
hot second-half start, scoring the opening five points of the frame. A Britt floater
started the half for the Green and Gold, before a Marcus Kitts steal led to a
Kendrix Brown 3-pointer. His long-range bucket cut the Monarch lead to 42-37
just over a minute into the second half.
Two of Boatner's record tying six 3-pointers came when the
Tribe needed them the most. Back-to-back
Boatner 3-pointers brought the Tribe to within 47-43 with 15:53 remaining.
After a Britt free throw at the 12:54 mark closed the gap
back to four at 51-47, ODU scored seven straight points to push the lead to
double digits. Britt brought the Tribe back within eight, 61-53, on a
3-pointers with 8:23 remaining, but it was as close as the Tribe would get. The
Monarchs used a 13-2 run to push the lead to its largest at 19 and put the game
out of reach.
For the game, the Tribe shot 34 percent (17-of-49) from the
floor, including 12-of-36 from 3-point range.
The 12 3-pointers by the Green and Gold tied the Ted Constant
Center record for triples made in a single game by an ODU opponent. W&M finished shooting 70.6
percent (12-of-17) from the charity stripe, including 10-of-13 in the first
half.
The senior trio of Frank Hassell, Keyon Carter, and Darius
James led Old Dominion. Hassell posted a
double-double consisting of 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Carter and James
chipped in 16 and 11 points, respectively.
For the game, ODU shot 52.9 percent (27-of-51) from the floor. The Monarchs were 8-of-20 (40 percent) from
3-point range and 15-of-23 (65.2 percent) from the free throw line.
First-half action saw the Green and Gold take an early 3-2
lead when Boatner drained a 3-pointer from the corner. ODU, however, answered with an 11-0 run over
the course of 4:11 to take a double-digit.
For the remainder of the half, the Tribe continued to chip away
at the ODU lead, behind the hot shooting of Boatner. Boatner connected on his second three of the
game with 10:59 left to go in the first half, trimming the deficit to 15-10. With 9:11 left in the first frame, Boatner
drained his third trifecta of the half, cutting the margin to 19-15.
A pair of Quinn McDowell free throws with 6:57 left in the
first, capped off a personal 5-0 run, which cut the Green and Gold deficit to
just 24-20.
ODU used a quick 9-1 run to extend its lead to 33-21 with four
minutes remaining. McDowell closed the half by draining a 3-pointer with just seven
seconds reaming to close the gap to 42-32 at the break.
