No. 23 Tribe Ends Regular Season with 4-0 Romp of ODU

NORFOLK, Va. - The No. 23-ranked William and Mary Tribe women's soccer team ended the regular season on a high note Friday night, beating the Old Dominion Lady Monarchs, 4-0, in Norfolk.  With the win, the CAA regular season champion Tribe ends the regular season with a 15-2-2 record that includes a 10-2 mark in the CAA.  With the loss, Old Dominion's season comes to an end with a record of 6-11-2 and a league mark of 3-7-1.

Sophomore Dani Rutter led the way for the Tribe Friday night, scoring a pair of goals.  Junior Cortlyn Bristol scored the game winner and had an assist, while freshman Anna Madden also netted a score.  Tallying assists on the night were junior Mallory Schaffer and freshman Emory Camper

In the first 15 minutes of the match, the Lady Monarchs came out looking for a goal, taking five shots to just one for the Tribe.  Despite the advantage, the College and its conference-leading defense didn't allow an early score.

With the defense holding, the Tribe's powerful offense got going with a score in the 24th minute.  With possession in ODU's half, Schaffer played a great one-touch pass to Bristol on the left side.  Firing from 10 yards out, Bristol beat the Old Dominion goalie near post for the match's first score.  Bristol's seventh goal of the season gave the Tribe a 1-0 lead over the Lady Monarchs.

In the 40th minute, the Tribe took advantage of an ODU mishap to net another goal.  After the ball was deflected in the 18-yard box of Old Dominion, Rutter collected the ball and shot it over the Lady Monarchs' keeper, netting the score.  Rutter's sixth goal of the year gave W&M a 2-0 lead headed in to halftime.

Just over 90 seconds after the break, Rutter and Bristol teamed up to tally the Tribe's third score of the match.  Taking a great pass from Bristol, Rutter cracked a shot from 16 yards out, beating the Old Dominion keeper to the right for her second goal of the match.  After 47 minutes, the Tribe led the Lady Monarchs, 3-0.

In the77th minute, a pair of freshman combined to net the Tribe's fourth goal against the Lady Monarchs.  On the attack, Camper took a shot that ricocheted off the crossbar and back in to play.  Madden was there to collect the rebound, scoring easily for the third time this season.

The 4-0 lead would be more than enough for the Tribe, as it claimed the shutout victory over the Lady Monarchs.  Simply put, the College was dominant in CAA conference play this season, outscoring its league opponents a combined, 29-5.

With the win, the College equaled two impressive marks.  The 15 regular-season wins are the most for the Tribe since the 2006 season, while the 10 CAA conference victories also matches that of the 2006 campaign.

Individually, Bristol became the fourth W&M player to score 20 points or more this season with her goal and assist against the Monarchs, joining teammates Schaffer (34), Rutter (24), and Camper (21).  Previously, the Tribe hadn't had four players reach 20 points in a season since 1997.

The No. 23 William and Mary Tribe women's soccer team will now return home to Williamsburg to host the Virginia 529 CAA Women's Soccer Championship this coming week.  The tournament will get underway with the semifinals on Thursday, November 3.  As the No. 1 seed, the Tribe will play the winner of the No. 4 and No. 5 seed's match on Friday, November 5 at 7:30 p.m.
