The William and Mary women's swimming team picked up its first win of the year Friday night, defeating Howard 186-69 at the Rec Center Pool. The Tribe evened its record at 1-1 overall with the win, while the Bison fell to 0-2 on the season.
200 Medley Relay
The Tribe note only won the first 12 events of the evening, but earned a 1-2-3 sweep in nine of those events beginning with the 200 medley relay. Leading the way was the team of
Hailey Hewitt (Fairfax, Va.),
Emily Bart (Cherry Hill, N.J.),
Sammie Cooper (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.), and
Gabrielle Mizerak (Manassas, Va.) in a time of 1:50.64 for the win.
Devin Henry (Roanoke, Va.),
Emma Carpenter (Haddonfield, N.J.),
Kayla O'Malley (Vienna, Va.), and
Rebecca Spicher (Chesapeake, Va.) swam 1:53.30 for second, and
Meghan Baker (New Rochelle, N.Y.),
Shelby Randall (Midlothian, Va.),
Liza McDevitt (Jenkintown, Pa.), and
Kelly Fini (Manassas, Va.) combined to take third in 1:56.60.
1000 Free
Devin Henry turned around immediately after the relay and powered on to victory in the 1000 free for her first win of the year in 10:59.32.
Gabby Famularo (Virginia Beach, Va.) was second in 11:09.42, and third went to
Shelby Randall in 11:17.34.
200 Free
Freshman
Rebecca Spicher picked up her first collegiate win in the next event, touching the wall in 1:56.71 to claim the 200 free. Classmate
Katie Thomas (Virginia Beach, Va.) was precisely one second back, and junior
Caylyn Tate (Sterling, Va.) rounded out the top three in 1:57.84.
100 Back
In the 100 back, it was
Sammie Cooper taking the winner's wreath with a time of 1:00.37. Senior
Kelly Fini was second, finishing the race in 1:04.46.
100 Breast
Freshman
Brodde Lamb (Charlottersville, Va.) was the next to pick up her first collegiate victory, winning the 100 breast in 1:08.72. Sophomore
Sara Shaner (Clarendon Hills, Ill.) was second in 1:10.99, and
Robyn Endsley (Chester, Va.) stopped the clock in 1:11.28 for third.
200 Fly
Junior
Kayla O'Malley won her first event of the season with a time of 2:11.35 for the 200 fly, finishing four seconds of classmate
Gabrielle Mizerak in 2:15.58.
Emma Carpenter rounded out the top three in 2:20.01.
50 Free
Senior
Molly Emery (Burke, Va.) won the first of her two events on the day with a lifetime-best 24.64 showing in the 50 free.
Hailey Hewitt touched the wall just behind her classmate, taking second in 24.81.
100 Free
After the first break,
Jen Bentley (Jamestown, N.Y.) won the 100 free by over one-half-of-a-second in 54.52. Second went to
Kelly Fini in 55.10, and
Brodde Lamb joined her teammates on the podium in 55.48 seconds.
200 Back
Katie Thomas etched her name on the winner's plaque after timing 2:09.77 in the 200 back, coming in well ahead of senior
Kristin Fimian's (Oakton, Va.) second-place 2:15.59.
200 Breast
Senior
Liza McDevitt was also a big winner, takign the 200 breast by nearly six seconds over
Rebecca Spicher. McDevitt timed 2:29.80 to Spicher's 2:35.19, and
Shelby Randall finished things off in 2:42.09.
500 Free
Molly Emery picked up her third win of the season with a 5:11.37 showing in the 500 free, roughly five seconds ahead of freshman
Liz Glenn (Greenwood, Village, Colo.). Glenn was second in 5:16.28, and
Meghan Baker was third in 5:21.23.
100 Fly
The College's final win before exhibitioning the final two events came in the 100 fly courtesy of freshman
Megan Howard (McLean, Va.). Howard timed 58.67 for the win, with
Kayla O'Malley second in 1:01.08 and
Laura Matthews (Drexel Hill, Pa.) third in 1:01.87.
William and Mary is back in the pool on Saturday, traveling to face Richmond in a 1 p.m. match-up.
