Newark, Del. - The William and Mary women's
swimming and diving team split its tri-meet on the road Saturday,
beating the host school and conference foe Delaware 155-136, and falling
to UMBC 177-121. The Tribe is now 7-5 on the year, and 3-2 against
Colonial Athletic Association schools.
Junior
Hailey Hewitt was the Tribe's top performer on the day,
claiming five victories including four in her three individual events.
Her day began on the College's 200 medley relay that beat Delaware in
1:47.83. Hewitt was the third leg of the relay, and was joined by Emily
Burns,
Emily Bart, and
Sara Shaner. In the 100 backstroke, she touched
the wall in 59.05 to claim victory over UMBC, and then was the overall
champ in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:03.53. Hewitt also went
58.46 in the 100 butterfly, beating Delaware in the race. Her four
individual victories lifted Hewitt into sixth place all-time at the
College with 57 career wins, just two behind All-American Erin Sheehey
'84 for fifth place.
Emily Bart also continued on from her spot on the relay team to
claim the overall title in the 200 breaststroke. The sophomore from
Cherry Hill, N.J., completed the course in 2:23.77 for the victory and
two individual wins. Overall event wins also went to junior
Molly Emery
in the 200 freestyle, timing 1:52.76, and to freshman Jennier Bentley
in the 500 freestyle with a 5:04.77 performance.
Three sophomores all earned individual victories on the day, two
coming against Delaware.
Caylyn Tate was the first to claim her gold
medal, beating UMBC in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 17:20.57. In
the 200 butterfly
Kayla O'Malley finished in 2:08.52 to beat Delaware,
and
Gabrielle Mizerak also beat the Blue Hens, this time in the 200 IM
with a time of 2:10.68.
The meet was finished off with the 400 free relay that beat Delaware
in 3:32.85. That squad included juniors
Liza McDevitt and
Molly Emery
along with freshmen
Sara Shaner and
Jennifer Bentley.
William and Mary brings the regular season to a close next weekend, hosting East Carolina on Saturday for Senior Day.
