WILLIAMSBURG - The William and Mary volleyball cruised to victory over Hampton Saturday afternoon, winning 3-0 on the second day of the Colonial Challenge. With the win, the Tribe improves to 3-2 and remains undefeated all-time against Hampton (18-0), while the Pirates fall to 0-7.
Box Score
The Tribe's effort was once again led through the middle, behind junior
Anne Dorff (Kent, Ohio) and sophomore
Shaylin O'Connell (Leesburg, Va.). Dorff hit .714 with a career-high five kills and no errors, and had a hand in six of the College's 10 blocks. O'Connell had seven kills and added three blocks. Also outstanding in the middle was freshman
Alexandra Ciaccio (Houston, Texas), who paired three kills and three blocks.
The senior duo of
Erin Skipper (Yorktown, Va.) and
Cassie Crumal (Castle Rock, Colo.) also played very well in helping the College to the win. Skipper had six kills and four digs, while Crumal averaged five assists per set, had four blocks, and scored two kills on three attempts. Freshman
Celine Alasomuka (Centreville, Va.) started as the libero before moving outside for the third set, and served out a season-high three aces along with five digs, two assists, and a block.
The first set was broken open early with a 6-0 run by the Tribe to go up 12-6. The jag included three blocks, all of which Dorff had a hand in, and finished out with Dorff feeding Crumal for a kill. The lead just kept extending from there, before Alasomuka served out the final three points for an ace and a kill apiece from O'Connell and
Gina Lang (Valparaiso, Ind.) to finish the matter at 25-9.
The second set was played much tighter, with Hampton leading early and the Tribe not taking control until an ace by
Molly Krull (Raleigh, N.C.) put her team on top 10-9. W&M embarked on a 6-2 run to break the set wide open, and a 6-1 streak finished things off at 25-16. The final run included kills from both Crumal and Ciaccio, as well as block by Ciaccio and Dorff.
Alasomuka took over the third set when she knocked down her first kill of the season to tie the stanza at 5-5, and then served out nine straight points. The run included two of her three aces on the day, as well as two kills from Dorff and a block by Dorff and Lang. Hampton was able to limit the Tribe from making any extended runs the rest of the way, but the Tribe kept patiently piling two or three points up for every one from the Pirates, and extended the lead out as far as 22-11 on a block by Alasomuka and O'Connell. Hampton had two final kills, but the Green and Gold closed out the match with the last three points, including an ace by Crumal.
William and Mary is back in action this evening, taking on American at 7 p.m. in the championship match of the Colonial Challenge.
