Fairfax, Va. - The William and Mary Tribe women's swimming and diving team had a spectacular morning session on Thursday at the CAA Championships, qualifying nine swimmers to the evening championships, including five set to compete in the "A" finals.
The morning session was highlighted by junior
Katie Radloff, the defending two-time CAA Swimmer of the Meet and Swimmer of the Year. Radloff crushed her own CAA meet, CAA conference, William and Mary school, and Jim McKay Natatorium records in the 50 free, touching the wall in a time of 22.39. Her time in the event again qualifies her provisionally for the NCAA Championships.
Joining Radloff in the championship final of the 50 free will be sophomore
Emily Burns, who qualified in a tie for sixth with her time of 23.48. Junior
Lindsay Guers was the top qualifier for the consolation final with her personal-best time of 23.56, a time which moves her up to third all-time at the College.
In the 500 free, freshman
Molly Emery qualified for the championship final with a time of 4:54.39. Emery's time breaks her own freshman record by three seconds and solidifies her in second place all-time at W&M.
Qualifying for the consolation final in the 500 free for the Tribe was senior
Marina Falcone and freshman
Liz Fireman. Falcone qualified second with her time of 4:57.60, while Fireman earned her spot in the final with a time of 4:59.73.
The College received three personal-best efforts in the 200 individual medley on Thursday morning. Both junior
Suzanne Figuers and senior
Whitney Pezza qualified for the championship finals later Thursday evening. Figuers touched the wall in a time of 2:05.48, which ranks her third all-time in school history, while Pezza finished in a time of 2:05.68, a time that puts her fourth all-time. Junior
Courtney Alles earned a spot in the consolation finals with her personal-best time of 2:05.94, which moves her up to fifth all-time in the event.
The William and Mary Tribe women's swimming and diving team will look to earn some more medals on Thursday evening when the finals of the 50 free, 500 free, 200 IM and the 200 freestyle relay are held. The evening session of the CAA Championships is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at the Jim McKay Natatorium on the campus of George Mason University.
