CENTERVILLE, Mass. - William and Mary first baseman Mike Sheridan and outfielder Ben Guez have been selected to the All-Eastern College Athletic Conference First Team.
Chosen by the Tampa Bay Rays with the first pick (143rd overall) of the fifth round in the 2008 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, Sheridan posted one of the best seasons in the program's history this year. Honored as a Louisville Slugger All-American, the Washington, D.C., native was also named to the Dick Howser Trophy Watch List and the Revised Wallace Award Watch List. He also earned All-Colonial Athletic Association First Team honors.
One of the nation's most-productive offensive players, Sheridan ranked among the country's top 20 in batting average, hits, RBI, runs scored, doubles, total bases and toughest to strike out at the conclusion of the regular season. Additionally, he led the CAA in batting average, runs scored, doubles and total bases, while he ranked second in hits and RBI. He also ranked among the conference's top 10 in slugging percentage, on-base percentage and home runs.
Sheridan etched his name throughout the Tribe's record book in '08, as he established single-season school records for hits (96), runs scored (76), RBI (72) and doubles (26). He also ranked among the program's single-season top 10 in batting average (.423), home runs (15), slugging percentage (.744), total bases (169) and at-bats (227).
Guez also registered an outstanding season in 2008 and was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 19th round (pick 583) earlier this month. A first-team All-CAA selection, Guez ranked ninth nationally in runs scored and 30th in hits at the conclusion of the regular season. The Houston, Texas native also finished the year ranked among the top 10 in the CAA in batting average (.390), slugging percentage (.662), on-base percentage (.470), total bases (153) hits (90) and runs scored (75). He ranked just outside the league's top 10 in home runs (13), doubles (18) and stolen bases (15), while his 75 runs scored are the second most in a season by a Tribe player.
Both Sheridan and Guez were instrumental in the Tribe's success this season, as the team tallied the second-most victories in school history (36). Additionally, the squad established a number of single-season records, including batting average (.343), home runs (75), doubles (156), slugging percentage (.553) and on-base percentage (.422). Additionally, the '08 team ranked second in single-season school history with 678 hits, 420 RBI, 1,093 total bases and 101 stolen bases.
Sheridan is currently playing for the Hudson Valley Renegades, while Guez is with the Oneonta Tigers (both in the New York-Penn League). In the season opener on Tuesday, Guez hit a solo home run in his first professional at-bat.
