HOT SPRINGS, VA - Tribe sophomore
Melissa DePuy (Naples, FL) was only one of 11 players to shoot in the 70s as William and Mary women's golf competed on the first day of the 54-hole CAA Women's Golf Championship. Two-time defending champion James Madison holds the first round lead after fashioning a 304, four shots better than second-place Richmond (308), as the two have broken away from the seven-team field with third-place UNC-Wilmington sitting at 319. The Tribe combined to card a 325 for round one and sits in fifth place with 36 holes remaining in the three-round tournament. UNCW's Becky Berzonski leads the individual medalist standings as the only golfer to match par on the day, firing a 72 on the 6,000-yard Old Course at The Homestead in Hot Springs, VA on a windy day which sent scores soaring.
The Tribe was led by DePuy who turned in a strong round of 75 (+3) to sit tied for fifth only three strokes off the lead and in position to make a run at the individual medal. Freshman
Erika Oldenkamp (Hinsdale, IL) carded an 82 to tie for 16th while juniors
Sayde Murray (York, PA) and
Pantipa Jinphiphadhana (Bangkok, Thailand) each turned in an 84 for 20th. Senior co-captain
Alex Hill (Westlake, OH) opened with an 85 for 25th.
The CAA Championship continues Saturday with tee times starting at 9:00 a.m.
