Nicole Dory (Fort Worth, Texas) was named Field Athlete of the Week after her best day of the year came Saturday at CNU. This is the second week in a row the Tribe has claimed the field award, and the third time this spring that W&M has produced the top runner.
Stites ran the fifth-fastest 5,000m ever record for an American junior (athlete under 20 years) when she timed 15:45.31 on Friday night at the Mt. SAC Relays, finishing 14th in a field of All-Americans and professional runners and just five seconds off of the American junior record. Her race was the first time a Tribe woman has ever broken 16 minutes in the 5,000m, and smashed the freshman record by 37 seconds and the school record set two weeks ago by 18 seconds. Stites is currently the top-ranked junior woman in the world in 2013, and ranks fifth in the NCAA East region and 10th among all collegiate runners.
Competing a little closer to home at CNU on Saturday, Dory recorded two season-best performances and helped W&M claim relay gold. In the triple jump, she was second with a leap of 11.48m (37-8) despite facing a stiff headwind. Even with the wind, it was still the 14th-longest jump ever in school history outdoors. Dory was also second in the pole vault, topping the bar at a season-best height of 3.60m (11-9.75). She rounded out her day by running the second-leg of the Tribe's victorious 4x100m relay.
A select group of athletes will compete this week at the Penn Relays, while the majority of the William and Mary squad gears up for next weekend's CAA Championships.
