Williamsburg - William and Mary tailback
Elijah Brooks (Largo, Md.) rushed for 146 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Tribe past state-rival VMI, 38-6, Saturday night at Zable Stadium.
W&M (1-2) posted its 21st consecutive victory over VMI (1-3) and snapped a six-game losing streak that dated back to last season.
Brooks recorded his sixth-career 100-yard rushing game on just 15 carries and scored three rushing touchdowns in a game for third time, as W&M ran for a season-high 262 yards.
DeBrian Holmes (Ft. Eustis, Va.) added 59 yards rushing on only five carries, and the Tribe held a 472-243 advantage in total offense.
Jake Phillips (Warm Springs, Va.) completed 10 of 17 passing attempts for 111 yards, and
Mike Potts (Middletown, Del.) threw for 99 yards and two touchdowns, on just 3-of-4 passing, after entering the contest in the third quarter.
Joe Nicholas (Sugarloaf, Pa.) led the Tribe receiving corps with 78 yards on three grabs, including a 54-yard scoring reception from Potts in the fourth quarter.
Elliott Mack (Irvington, N.J.) added 54 yards on three catches and had a 32-yard touchdown reception from Potts in the third quarter.
After defensive end
T.J. O'Neill (Duxbury, Mass.) recovered a fumble on the opening series of the game, the Tribe's offense went right to work, moving 46 yards on just five plays with Brooks inflicting most of the damage. Brooks ripped off runs of three and 25 yards to start the drive, then covered the final 20 with his first scoring run 3:34 into the contest to give the Tribe an early 7-0 lead.
Barrett Way connected on a 26-yard field goal on the next possession for VMI, but W&M answered quickly with another five-play scoring drive, marching 66 yards behind Phillips, Holmes and Brooks. Phillips completed his first two attempts on the drive for 14 yards to
Matt Trinkle (Whitehall, Pa.) and 11 yards to Nicholas, before Holmes carried for 25 yards down to the VMI 16. On the next play, Brooks sprinted 16 yards for his second score, giving the Tribe a 14-3 lead with 3:28 remaining in the first.
Derek Cox's (Winterville, N.C.) 16-yard punt return set up the Tribe's next scoring drive, which took only two plays and 26 yards. Brooks carried on both plays, running for 15 yards, then 11 more to give W&M a commanding 21-3 lead, which the Tribe carried into the break.
W&M committed its third turnover of the game, and season, on its first touch of the second half, but
Trevor McLaurin's (Wilmington, Del.) interception and 6-yard return gave it right back to the Tribe at the VMI 31-yard line.
Blair Pritchard (Mechanicsville, Va.) converted the opportunity with a 30-yard field goal, extending the lead to 24-3.
Redshirt freshman
Adrian Tracy (Sterling, Va.), who led the Tribe's stout defensive effort with nine tackles, sacked VMI quarterback Kyle Hughes on the first snap of the next series, and once again a Cox punt return, this time for 24 yards, would give W&M favorable field position at the VMI 40. Holmes rushed for eight on the first play, then Potts hooked up with Mack on his first attempt of the game for a 32-yard touchdown pass that gave the Tribe a 31-3 lead.
On the Tribe's next possession, Potts again found success deep, hitting a wide open Nicholas behind the Keydet defense for a 54-yard scoring pass and a 38-3 cushion on the first play of the fourth quarter.
Way added a 40-yard field goal to complete the Keydets' scoring, before true freshman corner
Max Harris (Marietta, Ga.) forced VMI's third turnover of the contest late in the fourth quarter.
Tracy finished with 2.5 tackles for loss, and
Richard Riley (Gaithersburg, Md.) added two unassisted stops behind the line of scrimmage.
Chris Ndubueze (Lanham, Md.) recorded a season-high eight tackles, and
Travis McLaurin (Wilmington, Del.) added a season-high seven stops.
W&M will conclude its three-game homestand next Saturday at 1 p.m., hosting Hofstra in an Atlantic 10 conference game at Zable Stadium. The contest will be carried live on the Atlantic 10 Television Network. Check TribeAthletics.com during the week for further broadcast information.
