RICHMOND, VA - In the final game of the 2003 season, there was a bit of symmetry for the Tribe football team, as a senior scored the first and last touchdown of the game, and in between, a heavy dose of outstanding performances from underclassmen highlighted W&M's 59-21 victory over Richmond.
The Tribe scored touchdowns on offense, defense and special teams en route to reclaiming the I-64 Trophy before a crowd of 6,228 at UR Stadium. The win evened the Tribe's record (5-5, 4-4) on the season and polished off a four-game winning streak by W&M to end the season.
"We played pretty well today," Tribe head coach
Jimmye Laycock said. "And getting back to 5-5 is huge for us, it really is. As the season went on, we got better and better."
Senior safety
Marques Bobo ignited the Tribe with a 69-yard punt return after the W&M defense held on the first Richmond offensive drive.
"Marques certainly got us off to a good start," Laycock said.
After Richmond tied the game, junior tailback
Jon Smith scored his first touchdown of the season from one yard out to put the Tribe back up 14-7. With the score tied at 14 in the second quarter, W&M took the lead for good when
Greg Kuehn converted a 39-yard field goal attempt. The Tribe took a 10-point lead into the locker room at halftime after redshirt freshman tailback
Trevor McLaurin scored from two yards out. That score was set up by a 46-yard pass from junior QB
Lang Campbell to junior wideout
Dominique Thompson.
W&M broke the game open in the third quarter with another pair of touchdowns, both off of the arm of Campbell. The junior hit tight end
Matt Trinkle perfectly on a play-action pass from six yards out to make the score 31-14. Thompson then was on the receiving end of an 11-yard pass from Campbell where he caught the ball at the three-yard line and fought his way in to put the Tribe up 24 points.
Smith scored again early in the fourth quarter to give the Tribe a season-high in points. The Tribe defense then got on the board as and the final touchdown came when sophomore safety
James Miller stepped in front of a Stacy Tutt pass and sprinted 77 yards down the sideline for the score. Finally, the scoring was capped by senior fullback
Nick Rogers, who broke through from the one-yard line with just over three minutes remaining to set the final margin.
On the Tribe's final scoring drive, senior wideout
Rich Musinski caught a six-yard pass from Campbell that put him over the 4,000-yard mark for his career, making him just the third player in NCAA Division I-AA history to reach that mark.
The Tribe had a balanced offensive attack, rushing for 194 yards and throwing for 222 yards. McLaurin led all Tribe rushers with 53 yards on eight carries. Smith contributed 46 yards, while Campbell and Thompson each had 41 yards on the ground.
Campbell started off slowly but finished 16 of 23 for 222 yards and two scores, giving him a total of 22 touchdown passes on the season in just 10 games.
Musinski led the Tribe receivers with six catches for 76 yards, while Thompson had five catches for 57 yards.
Defensively, W&M was led by senior
Paul Carpenter, who had 12 tackles.
Travis McLaurin and
Larry Pendleton each had seven stops in the victory. In addition to his 77-yard interception return for a score, Miller earlier in the game made his first career pick and ran that one back 62 yards before being tackled.
