Tribe Sweeps Spider Alumni Open in Smith's Debut

MECHANICSVILLE, Va. – The Adam Smith era could not have started much better for William & Mary cross country.

The Tribe swept the team titles at the Spider Alumni Open on Saturday morning at Pole Green Park, giving Smith a pair of victories in his first meet at the helm of the program.

The W&M men captured the Spider Alumni Open for the first time since 2019, edging Georgetown by a single point, 33-34. The Tribe women followed with a 56-point performance to finish 15 points ahead of Georgetown and claim their first team title at the event since 2016.

Senior Hayes Trapp led a dominant showing for the Tribe men, finishing runner-up in the 6K with a personal-best time of 18:19.0. Graduate transfer Alex Jordan made an immediate impact in his W&M debut, crossing the line fifth in a personal-best 18:29.6.

W&M placed four runners inside the top eight and all five scorers among the top 12. Junior Caleb Wilcox finished sixth in 18:36.7, while sophomore Eli Phillips followed closely behind in eighth at 18:37.8. Sophomore Nolan Yeagle rounded out the Tribe's top five, placing 12th in 18:50.0.

Carson Rackley (18:57.6) and Hayden Goodman (19:01.7) gave the Green and Gold seven runners inside the top 20. Sophomore Tristan Thurneysen was 21st in 19:16.9, while senior Eric Fagan posted a personal-best 19:19.6 to place 23rd.

The Tribe's depth proved to be the difference in the one-point victory. W&M's five scorers combined for 33 points, narrowly beating Georgetown's 34, while third-place Norfolk State finished with 65.

On the women's side, junior Molly Weithman led the way with a runner-up finish in the 4K, crossing the line in 14:00.4. She finished just five seconds behind individual champion Peninah Mutisya of Hampton.

Junior Abby Lane was the second Tribe runner across the line, placing eighth in 14:36.2, while sophomore Chloe Miller gave W&M three runners inside the top 10 with a 10th-place finish in 14:46.0.

Freshman Caroline Sapperstein turned in a strong collegiate debut, placing 17th in 14:58.1, before sophomore Meghan Sullivan rounded out W&M's scoring five in 19th at 15:02.3. 

Senior Paige Dumont added a personal-best performance, finishing 39th in 15:35.2.

W&M finished with 56 points to beat Georgetown (71) and Richmond (73) for the team crown. The victory marked the Tribe women's first at the Spider Alumni Open since 2016 and completed a sweep of the season-opening meet.

The Tribe returns to action Friday, Sept. 11, at the Virginia Invitational at Panorama Farms in Charlottesville.
