Tribe Rallies for Five Runs in the Ninth to Topple Elon

ELON, N.C. — Down to its final strike in the ninth inning, a game-tying single from Witt Scafidi kept William & Mary alive before three more runs crossed the plate as the Tribe rallied to defeat Elon 9-6 on Friday night at Latham Park.

Matthew Kosuda delivered the go-ahead RBI for William & Mary (12-20, 4-9 CAA), who erased a two-run deficit in the ninth as it scored five runs.

W&M took the lead first on a solo home run by Jamie Laskofski in the third inning. Tribe starter Jack Pye retired the first eight batters he faced and worked out of a jam in the third inning to hold Elon scoreless through the third.

The Phoenix (13-20, 5-11) rallied in the fourth when they struck for three runs. However, W&M had an immediate response with a three-spot in the top of the fifth. The inning started with a leadoff homer off the bat of Matthew Kosuda to make it 3-2.

Later, Laskofski tied the game with an RBI single. After stealing second, Laskofski scored the go-ahead run on a single by Sam Kaczmarek, making it 4-3.

Elon tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on a wild pitch that scored a run. The Phoenix tacked on two more in the sixth to go ahead 6-4.

The stage was set for a rally in the ninth when Laskofski and Kaczmarek drew consecutive one-out walks. Scafidi's RBI single tied the game at 6-6 before Kosuda delivered the go-ahead base knock.

Following a hit batter, Ryan Santangelo stepped in with the bases loaded and drove in two runs with a single to extend the lead to 9-6.

Jack Weight shut the door on the mound, retiring the Phoenix in order with a pair of strikeouts. Weight was the winning pitcher. RJ Latkowski was charged with the loss for Elon.
