Campbell Takes Series Opener from Tribe

BUIES CREEK, N.C. — A second-inning grand slam proved to be the difference as William & Mary baseball fell to Campbell 7-2 in the conference opener on Friday night at Jim Perry Stadium.

Andrew Schuldt provided the bases-clearing blast for Campbell (5-7, 1-0 CAA), who was otherwise held scoreless for the first five innings.

The Tribe (5-6, 0-1) got on the board in the fourth inning when Matthew Kosuda doubled in a run to score Connor Chavez, who drew a leadoff hit by pitch. Later in the inning, Charlie Iriotakis cut the deficit to 4-2 with a sacrifice fly down the third base line in foul territory that allowed Kosuda to score.

However, W&M was unable to trim the lead any further as it was held scoreless for the final five frames. The Tribe recorded four hits on the night.

The Fighting Camels extended their lead in the sixth with a two-run single from Jett Music before adding another insurance run in the seventh and two more in the eighth.

The Tribe pitched five freshmen in the contest. Connor Jernigan tossed a scoreless seventh inning, recording a strikeout.

Connor Hensley was the winning pitcher for Campbell. Zach Boyd was charged with the loss for the Tribe.
