Baseball Unable to Stave Off UNCW Rally, Falling 5-3

WILMINGTON, N.C. — A big seventh inning proved costly as William & Mary fell to UNCW 5-3 in the series opener at Brooks Field on Friday evening.

The Tribe (11-13, 3-4 CAA) out-hit the Seahawks 11-6 despite the loss.

Sophomore Zach Boyd started on the mound for W&M. His defense helped him out in the first inning when Chase Ecker made a running grab in center field and doubled off a runner at second to end the frame.

In the top of the second, W&M broke open the scoring when Jett Humphreys hit an RBI single to right field, scoring Charlie Iriotakis.

Boyd responded with a shutdown inning in the second, retiring the Seahawks (17-8, 6-1) in order. The right-hander faced the minimum in the third, retiring seven straight UNCW batters through the fourth inning.

Jamie Laskofski would double the Tribe's lead in the third when he blasted a leadoff home run to make it 2-0. After Trey Christman reached on an error and was bunted over to third, Iriotakis drove him in with a groundout to shortstop for a 3-0 lead.

Boyd departed the game after four scoreless innings, capped off by a strike-em-out, throw-em-out double play as catcher Witt Scafidi nabbed UNCW's Kevin Jones stealing second base.

Charlie Seneker came in to relieve in the fifth, working around a one-out walk to retire the side. In the sixth inning, the Tribe turned its third double play of the night when Seneker fanned Jones, who was then called for batter's interference on a runner attempting to steal.

The seventh inning proved decisive for the home team as UNCW struck for five runs on four hits, aided by four walks issued by the Tribe pitching staff.

W&M got the tying run on second base in the eighth inning but was unable to score. Clay Masonis closed the game on the mound for UNCW, earning a six-out save.
