Baseball Holds Off North Carolina A&T, 6-5

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — Jett Humphreys collected two hits while pitching a scoreless inning on the mound to earn the decision as William & Mary held off North Carolina A&T 6-5 on Saturday afternoon at Plumeri Park.

N.C. A&T (4-17, 2-6 CAA) opened the scoring in the first with an RBI double off the bat of Savoi Edwards. Starter Zach Boyd bounced back in the second as he retired the Aggies in order.

The offense for W&M (9-12, 2-3) got hot in the bottom of the second. After the first two batters reached on base hits, Sam Kaczmarek tied the game with an RBI groundout before Humphreys doubled down the left field line for a 2-1 lead.

Boyd delivered a shutdown inning in the third as he faced the minimum, part of a stretch where he retired nine straight A&T hitters.

However, the Aggies retook the lead with a two-RBI double in the fourth as they went ahead 3-2.

The Tribe tied the contest in the fifth thanks to Connor Chavez, who reached on a leadoff walk and advanced to third before scoring on a wild pitch. Chavez would later drive in the go-ahead run in the sixth, plating Sam Kaczmarek with a sacrifice bunt to put W&M ahead 5-4.

N.C. A&T tied the game in the top of the seventh. Humphreys, who took the mound after switching from third base, was able to work out of a major jam. With one out and the bases loaded, the freshman struck out Edwards and got a popout to first base to end the inning.

W&M took the lead for good in the bottom of the seventh, taking advantage of an A&T throwing error that allowed Trey Christman to score, making it a 5-4 game. Witt Scafidi later scored on a wild pitch for a key insurance run that put W&M ahead 6-4.

A&T hit a solo home run in the eighth but got no further as Connor Jernigan closed out the game on the mound, striking out a pair in the ninth to earn a six-out save. Humphreys was the winning pitcher with his scoreless seventh. Kobie Cushing was tagged with the loss for A&T.
