Baseball Rallies Late But Falls Short at Georgetown

TYSONS, Va. — Despite out-hitting the Hoyas, William & Mary baseball fell in the series opener at Georgetown 6-5 on Friday afternoon at Capital One Park.

The Tribe (5-11) broke through in the first inning with an RBI single from Witt Scafidi, driving in Jamie Laskofski who walked to get aboard.

W&M starter Luke Calveric worked out of trouble in the bottom of the first, stranding runners at second and third as he racked up a pair of strikeouts.

Georgetown (13-6) would answer back with two runs in the bottom of the second and two more in the third to take a 4-1 lead.

In the top of the fifth inning, Jett Humphreys led off with a double for his first career hit. Trey Christman drove him in with a double to right center, making it a 4-2 ballgame. The Hoyas struck back quickly, however, scoring twice with help from a Tribe error in centerfield.

Hank Lippman pitched effectively out of the bullpen for the Green & Gold, holding the Hoyas scoreless from the sixth through eighth innings. Lippman struck out three batters while allowing no hits, retiring nine of the 10 batters he faced.

The Tribe started a rally in the top of the ninth when Anthony Greco drew a leadoff walk. Humphreys doubled again before an RBI groundout by Chase Ecker scored a run, making it 6-4. Laskofsi singled up the middle for an RBI, cutting the deficit to one.

However, Georgetown's Luke Jackman got a strikeout to end the comeback attempt. Jackman earned the save while Georgetown starter Kai Leckszas picked up the win. Calveric was the losing pitcher for W&M.
