Tribe Alum Daniel Dixon ’17 Named Head Coach of NBA G-League Oklahoma City Blue

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary alum Daniel Dixon '17 was named the head coach of the Oklahoma City Blue, the NBA G-League affiliate for the NBA Champion Oklahoma City Thunder.
 
Dixon became the third former Tribe standout to be named a head coach in the NBA G-League joining Jim Moran '01 and Chris Darnell '09. Moran was the head coach of the Rip City Remix in 2023-24, while Darnell was the Cleveland Charge head coach last season.
 

After graduating from W&M in 2017, Dixon played professionally for three years in the NBA G-League with the Windy City Bulls, Northern Arizona Suns, and Maine Red Claws. He started his coaching career as the video coordinator and basketball operations assistant for the Charlotte Hornets in 2021. Dixon joined the Oklahoma City Blue as an assistant coach in 2022 and last season was the assistant coach for player development for the Oklahoma City Thunder. He won an NBA G-League Championship with the Blue in 2024, before helping the Thunder to the NBA Championship last season.

Dixon graduated from W&M as part of the program's winningest class with 77 victories over his four seasons. He enjoyed his best campaign as a senior, earning First Team All-CAA and NABC All-District honors. Dixon was also named the program's Most Valuable Player following the 2017 season. He ranks fourth in W&M history in 3-pointers made (241) and 15th in scoring (1,355). In 2016-17, he averaged a program-record 22.9 points per game in CAA play and finished the year overall ranked second in the league and 58th nationally at 19.2 points per contest.
 
The linage of Tribe alums in the NBA continues to grow. Darnell was recently named an assistant coach for the Sacramento Kings. Moran was an NBA assistant for nine years with the Portland Trailblazers, Detroit Pistons, and Sacramento Kings and is currently the associate head coach at Florida State University. Sean Sheldon '16 is in his fourth season as an assistant coach with the Utah Jazz.
