8/17/2025 10:27:00 PM

Box Score NORFOLK, Va.— William & Mary women's soccer's bid to tie the match with 20 seconds left at Old Dominion was just barely gotten to by the ODU (1-0-1, 0-0 SBC) keeper as the Monarchs survived to beat the Tribe in a Sunday night 757 matchup, 1-0.

W&M (0-1-1, 0-0 CAA) was awarded a free kick in with 26 seconds on the clock as junior Molly Widderich served up a nice ball into the center of the box. Madison Moon emerged from a scrum of players to steer it towards the top right of the goal before the bid was shut down by a dive from the netminder.

The two sides brought energy and physicality from the start of the game, with the Tribe owning the match's first shot attempt via Mia Abbey in the 8th minute but fell off target.

ODU answered with their first try for goal a minute later, but Gwen Doughty was up to the task in net, making her first save of the evening. The Tribe freshman finished the game with three saves in her second career start.

The Monarchs turned up their attack a notch for the remainder of the half, holding possession, but were unable to crack the Tribe backline.

Molly Widderich and Kenley Campbell each stepped up individually, stalling multiple attacking build-ups for the hosts.

Old Dominion was able to muster three more shot attempts throughout the half with none coming close enough to scare the scoring stalemate, holding a 4-1 shot advantage in the scoreless 45 minutes.

ODU fired three more shots in the opening 10 minutes of the first half with Doughty making two more stops to keep it 0-0.

W&M mounted a dangerous counterattack in the 61st minute with Paige Seitz streaking down the right wing. Her shot from 15 yards out just curved wide of the far post.

The Monarchs got the tally they were searching in the 67th minute to make it 1-0 and began to focus on limiting the Tribe's chances to equalize.

Ivey Crain shook free in the 82nd minute trying a long attempt. The try found the same fate as Seitz's shot, just missing the far post.

The two teams battled for possession from there on in until the last second chance from Moon as the game concluded 1-0 in favor of the hosts.

Shots in the second half were 6-5 ODU, making the total 10-6 on the evening in favor of the Monarchs.

The Tribe is next in action at Martin Family Stadium on Thursday, hosting Loyola (Md.) at 7 p.m.
