GREENVILLE, N.C.— Sophomore
Katie Suk posted a 3-over 75 for William & Mary women's golf, the Tribe's best score of the week, in the final round of the Ironwood Invitational on Tuesday.
The Tribe finished in 15
th place over the 54-hole event hosted by ECU at Ironwood G&CC in Greenville, N.C. Virginia Tech was crowned the team champion at 11-over par for the event that was contested on Monday and Tuesday. W&M posted team totals of 326-325-315.
Avery Thompson led the way for the Green and Gold over Monday's two rounds, opening with scores of 79-81. Thompson posted a solid 76 over the final 18 holes on Tuesday to be the Tribe's top finisher for the tournament. The W&M junior put up matching 38's on each side of Ironwood G&CC for her 4-over par effort on Tuesday. Her 236 total placed her T-63.
Suk's final round 75 put her just one shot off her career-low score. The sophomore opened Monday morning with an 84 before firing a 79 in the afternoon round that included eight pars and one bogey on the front nine. Suk improved that front-nine effort by one shot on Tuesday using a birdie and a bogey to shoot even-par 36. She added another birdie on the back side to card her 75. She moved up 12 spots on the leaderboard the final day to finish with a 238 total and T-70.
Faith Garcia came in three shots behind Suk over the 54-holes. Garcia posted 79 in both the first and third rounds with an 83 coming in Monday's second round. Her 25-over total of 241 placed her T-76.
The Tribe lineup was rounded out by
Samantha Skinner (T-85, 85-82-85) and
Simone Senk (91
st, 85-91-88).
The event was the regular season finale for W&M, who will head to Southport, N.C. on April 11-13 for the CAA Championships.
