TRIBE NOTES
• The Matchup
William & Mary returns home after a three-game northern road trip and currently riding a two-game win streak. The Tribe will host UNCW on Friday night in a battle of 3-2 teams in a congested CAA. Tip is at 7 p.m. on FloCollege and MASN. The Tribe holds a five-game win streak over UNCW.
• The Opponent
Apart of a six-way tie for third place in the CAA at 3-2, UNCW enters Friday's matchup off an overtime win over Monmouth in which they erased a 11-point fourth quarter deficit. The Seahawks other conference wins are over Campbell and Northeastern. They carry the league's second-best offensive attack at 65.7 ppg.
• Last Time Out
For the first time this season the Tribe picked up a win while trailing at the half, using a 23-9 fourth quarter to down Northeastern 74-66 in Boston on Sunday.
Bella Nascimento registered 24 points to lead the way with
Kayla Rolph joining her in double figures with 12.
Â
• Tribe on the Air
Friday's matchup will be the second of five W&M games broadcast on MASN this season. Home matchups with Campbell, Charleston and Hofstra can also be caught on the regional sports network, while still being simulcast on FloCollege.
• Bella Buckets
Bella Nascimento has proven herself to be one of the CAA's premier offensive threats through five games. The senior guard is averaging 19.4 ppg in CAA action, fourth best in the league. She is tied for the league lead for 20-plus point performances in conference play with three, deadlocked with Drexel's Amaris Baker.
• But Wait, There's More
Nascimento is also nearing in on a career milestone, currently sitting 29 points away from 1,000 for her career. 586 of her 971 career points have come during her year and a half at William & Mary after transferring from Manhattan. Nascimento's 24 on Sunday at Northeastern marked her 50th career game in double-figures and 15th game of 20-plus points. She has also scored over 20 in back-to-back games for the second time this year.
• Rolph is Rolling
Not to be outdone by Nascimento's stellar performances of late,
Kayla Rolph has also made quite the impact for the Tribe over the last seven games. After only averaging 2.1 ppg over the season's first nine games, Rolph is scoring 12 per over the last seven outings, scoring in double figures five times. Her five games in double digits are the most in a single season for her career.
• Did Someone Say Comeback?
For the first time in eight tries this year, W&M successfully came back from a halftime deficit to earn a win at Northeastern. The Tribe found themselves down 40-37 at the half, and 57-51 after the third before winning by six. The last time W&M won a game trailing at the half was last February at Hampton. The last time they won down after three frames was over a year ago, 1/7/24 at Hofstra.
• Taking Care of the Rock
Part of the reason for W&M's fourth quarter turnaround in Boston was the ability to take care of the ball in the second half. The Tribe committed zero turnovers over the game's final 20 minutes after eight in the first half. The eight giveaways match a season-low for W&M and tie for the second least under
Erin Dickerson Davis.
• Injury Bug
After a year in which injuries were few and far between for the Tribe, the injury bug has caught up with them through 16 games in 2024-25. The Tribe has had five different players miss time with injury this year for a total of 21 games.
Natalie Fox (7),
Kayla Beckwith (6),
Alexa Mikeska (3),
Rebekah Frisby-Smith (2), Anahi Cauley (2),
Marley Long (1) is the group who makes up those absences.
• 70 Points = W
The 74 points on Sunday marked the fourth time this season, and first time in consecutive games, the Tribe has scored 70-or-more points. W&M is 4-0 in those games.
• Becoming the Norm
The 3-2 start in conference play makes it back-to-back seasons the Tribe is above .500 after five conference games. The previous time W&M accomplished the feat was the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons, going 3-2 in both.
• Sharing the Rock
61.2% of the Tribe's baskets this year has been assisted, the second highest rate in the CAA and 59th in the nation. Drexel is the only CAA team with a higher percentage of assists at 71.0%, third best in the nation.
• Keeping the Streak Alive
With a victory this weekend the Tribe can clinch going .500-or-better in January for the third consecutive season. The previous two seasons W&M has gone 5-3 in the opening month of CAA play.
Erin Dickerson Davis has never had a losing record in January or February during her time at William & Mary.
• Newfound Height
The Tribe adds six new players to the roster in 2024-25, four freshmen and two transfers. Five of the six newcomers are over 6-feet tall. The average height of the six new players is slightly over 6'1, while the average height of the eight returners is 5'9.
• Speaking of Height...
Freshman
Natalie Fox is the Tribe's tallest newcomer, as well as tallest player, this season at 6-foot-4. She is the tallest player W&M has had since Abby Rendle, also at 6-foot-4, who graduated in 2018.
• Coach E Extended
W&M Director of Athletics,
Brian Mann, announced in late August that head coach
Erin Dickerson Davis had agreed to a contract extension through 2029. Through two seasons Davis became the fastest coach to 20 CAA wins in program history and fastest to 30 career wins in 95 years.
• 60 is the Magic Number
60 points is a key number for W&M. The Tribe is 20-6 under
Erin Dickerson Davis when holding teams below 60. While team's have had a mixed bag of success scoring in the 60s vs. W&M, opponents are 32-5 against them when scoring 70+ since 2020-21. Offensively, the Tribe is 36-13 when scoring over 60 and 3-23 when held below 60 under Davis.
