TRIBE NOTES
Teeing Off
William & Mary men's golf returns to action for their second event of the season at The Goat, hosted by Navy in Annapolis Md. The Naval Academy Golf Club will play host for the 54-hole event.
Last Time Out
The Tribe started off the 2024-25 campaign on a solid note, earning a fifth place finish at the Bryan National Collegiate hosted by UNCG Sept. 8-10. W&M posted a 7-over total of 871 (293-290-288).
Camden Goldknopf led the way for the Tribe at 3-under 213 in his collegiate debut, finishing T-8.
The Course
The Naval Academy Golf Club began in 1938, being eventually redesigned by William Flynn in the early 1940s. Flynn, who designed U.S. Open venues like The Country Club and Cherry Hills Country Club, used 'rolling terrain of inlets and surrounding tidal rivers of the Chesapeake Bay' to create a championship caliber course. After facility upgrades in 2017, the club kicked off an ongoing renovation in 2018 that includes bunker renovations, new fairways, and expansion of the green complexes. It is the home course of the Brigade of Midshipmen, Naval Academy golf teams, active and retired military, USNA faculty and staff, and civilian members. The track will play to a par of 70 and 7,025 yards for the tournament.
Keep an Eye on the New Guys
A pair of newcomers to W&M led the way at the season opening Bryan National Collegiate,
Camden Goldknopf and
Max Johnson. Goldknopf fired a final round 4-under 68 to pace him to a T-8 finish with a 3-under total. Johnson, a graduate transfer from Auburn, put up matching 1-under 71s over the final 36 holes to finish in a tie for 15th at 1-over par.
Final Round Fever
For most of the 2023-24 season the final round of events was kind to W&M. Starting with last year's Bryan National Collegiate, which concluded the fall, through the end of the regular season, the Tribe averaged 288 in the final rounds. Three of those five final rounds included scores of 288 or better including a season-low team score of 284 at the Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate. W&M continued the trend to start off 2024-25, posting a even-par 288 at the Bryan National Collegiate.
