WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary men's swim team received the Coastal Athletic Association Team Academic Excellence Award for the 2023‐24 season, the league announced on Tuesday.
Men's swimming garnered the academic excellence for the fifth time in the seven years of the league accolade (the honor was not handed out during the 2019-20 season due to COVID-19). The swimming program produced a cumulative GPA of 3.49 in 2023-24, which was the highest for a men's teams at W&M.
The Team Academic Excellence Award recognizes the institution with the highest collective grade point average in all 22 sports sponsored by the CAA. The team GPA is a calculation of the grade point average of each student-athlete who appeared on an institution's roster throughout the final day of their respective championship seasons during the 2022‐23 academic year.
The honor for men's swimming adds to a long list of academic accomplishments for W&M this year. Here are some of those departmental academic achievements in 2023-24:
- A total of
137 W&M student-athletes earned undergraduate or graduate degrees in 2023-24.
- As a department, W&M achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.37, including a 3.40 during the spring semester.
- For the second-straight spring, all 21 W&M programs produced a semester GPA above 3.0. A total of 11 programs enjoyed a spring GPA of 3.5 or higher.
- A school-record
232 W&M Provost Award winners were honored this year, recognizing student-athletes who maintain over a 3.5 GPA.
- The Tribe
led all Division I public institutions in Federal Graduation Rate for the 18th time in the last 19 years. W&M's 88% FGR was well ahead of the national average for all student-athletes (69%). It ranked 10th overall among all Division I schools and was the highest in the state of Virginia.
- In the latest Academic Progress Rates, W&M
ranked No. 1 nationally among all Division I public schools in NCAA Public Recognition Awards (top 10% of all squads in their respective sport) and in perfect multiyear APR scores. A total of 12 Tribe programs received NCAA Public Recognition Awards and 12 received perfect multiyear APRs. W&M's APR for 2022-23 was 994.61 among its 21 programs (indoor and outdoor track and field are combined), while its multiyear APR was 993.77, ahead of the national average of 984. W&M produced 16 perfect APRs for the 2022-23 season.
- Four W&M student-athletes were initiated into the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa Society in 2023-24. The list of student-athletes recognized this year includes
Lanni Brown (women's basketball),
Alek Kuzmenchuk (men's gymnastics), Sarah Wozniak (women's gymnastics), and Elizabeth Upright (women's track and field). All-time, W&M Athletics has produced 200 initiates to Phi Beta Kappa.
