Lax to Host ECU on Saturday

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – After playing four of its first five games on the road, the William & Mary lacrosse team will play the first of four straight home contests when it hosts East Carolina at Martin Family Stadium on Saturday at noon.

Admission is free. William & Mary Athletics, in conjunction with the William & Mary Police Department, has implemented a clear bag policy that regulates the size and type of bag that may be carried into W&M Athletics facilities during the 2023-24 year, including Busch Field, Kaplan Arena, Martin Family Stadium, Plumeri Park, and Zable Stadium. A Look at the Tribe
W&M enters the weekend with a 2-3 record after opening its season with four of five games on the road. The Tribe won its only home game this year, a 12-8 victory against Old Dominion. Kate Draddy currently leads the team with 11 points (5g, 6a) and 19 draw controls, while Paige Gilbert has also come up big with nine points (7g, 2a) and 12 draw controls. Defensively, Kathleen Cozzi has totaled a team-high five caused turnovers with nine ground balls, while Courtney Vasquenza has totaled a team-best 11 ground balls with three caused turnovers. Goalie Elise Palmer has recorded 45 saves with a .451 save percentage.
 
Scouting ECU
After opening its season with back-to-back wins against Queens and Gardner-Webb, ECU has lost two of its last three contests and owns a 3-2 overall record, which includes a 13-10 setback versus Elon in its last outing. Frances Kimel leads the team with 22 points (13g, 9a), while Erin Gulden has totaled 15 points (11g, 4a). Ellie Bromley has also provided significant production with 16 draw controls, 17 ground balls and 13 caused turnovers.

W&M and ECU have played just once, as the Pirates earned a 16-6 victory in Greenville, N.C.
 
Last Meeting vs. ECU
W&M concluded its 2022 non-conference slate with a 16-6 setback at ECU. Although the contest was tied at 5-5 early in second quarter, ECU scored 11 unanswered goals to pull away for the victory. Caroline Hertzberg totaled a team-high five draw controls, while Kathleen Cozzi recorded a team-best four ground balls.
 
Last Time Out
Playing in pouring rain and windy conditions for nearly the entire contest, W&M fell at VCU, 15-8, on Wednesday afternoon. Although the Rams scored the game's first six goals, the Tribe answered with back-to-back scores by Jaylin Locke and Paige Gilbert to trail by just four at halftime. However, the Rams opened the second half on a 4-1 run to build a 10-3 advantage and maintained at least a six-goal margin during the remainder of the contest en route to securing the non-conference victory. Gilbert led the Tribe and equaled a career high with three goals to go with a career-best six draw controls. The Doylestown, Pa., native also recorded two ground balls and a caused turnover.
 
Balanced Attack
W&M has utilized a balanced attack this season as at least six different goal scorers in every game. Additionally, 16 different Tribe players have found the back of the net this season. 
 
Overtime Success
With the 12-11 victory at George Washington last week, W&M has won four of its last five overtime games dating back to 2019.
 
Seizing the Moment
During the last two seasons, W&M has posted a 5-1 record in games decided by just one goal.

Record Watch
One of the most successful goalies in school history, Elise Palmer is ranked seventh in school history in career saves (332). She needs 54 more saves to pass Carlen Sellers for sixth on the all-time list.
 
Caroline Hertzberg currently ranks 10th all-time at W&M in draw controls (104), while her 51 career caused turnovers is just one shy of moving into the program's all-time top-10 list.
 
Courtney Vasquenza is also closing in on W&M's top-10 list for caused turnovers with 38.
