TRIBE NOTES
Last Time Out:
W&M took on nationally ranked New Hampshire at Martin Family Stadium on Thursday afternoon. The No. 19 Wildcats used a fast first half to skirt past the Tribe 4-2. Scoring in the contest started early and often with UNH striking just six minutes into the contest. The Tribe answered swiftly however, with
Aidan Morrison scoring minutes later to tie things at one. The Wildcats tacked on two more scores in the first half and another insurance goal in the second.
Lucas Caldas scored for the Tribe to bring the final score to 4-2.
The Caldas Effect:
Caldas' goal in the second half against UNH was his second goal in as many games for the Tribe. The sophomore scored just one goal in his freshman campaign and now has three career goals after his latest scoring streak. Two of his three career tallies have come against ranked opponents, he scored in the Tribe's upset win of No. 10 Wake Forest last year, before scoring most recently against No. 19 New Hampshire. He worked his way in to the starting XI for the first time this season on Thursday against the Wildcats.
Earning His Stripes:
Aidan Morrison earned his first career assist last week at Coastal Carolina and followed that up with his first career goal against the Wildcats. Morrison took a cross from
Daniel Salom that deflected off the keeper and tapped the ball into the vacant goal in the 11
th minute. Morrison was selected to the Top Drawer Soccer preseason Freshman All-America team.
Spreading the Wealth:
Seven different members of the Tribe have recorded points in the first three games of the season. Caldas leads the team in scoring with his two goals, while
Alfredo Bozalongo and Morrison have totaled a goal and an assist on the year. Salom's assist on Thursday was his first point of the season.
Series History:
Tuesday evening's matchup between the Tribe and Lancers will be the 10
th all-time meeting between the two Virginia schools. W&M are unbeaten against Longwood, holding an 8-0-1 all-time record and a 4-0-1 record since the Lancers turned Division I in 2007. The lone tie in the series came last season in Williamsburg by a score of 1-1. The Tribe is 2-0-0 in trips to Farmville, Va. winning both previous matches in overtime in 2015 and 2017.
Scouting the Lancers:
Longwood has yet to leave home this season, picking up wins against Hampden-Sydney College and Mount St. Mary's (Md.). The Lancers play six of their nine non-conference matches at home this season and were selected fifth in the Big South preseason poll while also earning a first-place vote. Emilio Segovia has a pair of goals and an assist to lead Longwood in scoring so far this season. Max Hinke has started both games in goal, only allowing one score and making four saves on the year.
