Box Score CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA.- Joe Delossantos and
Ben Williamson swatted solo homers, but the Tribe could not overcome a pair of big Virginia innings as William & Mary fell 7-3 in Charlottesville Tuesday afternoon. The Green and Gold fall to 7-6 on the year with the loss, while No. 17 UVA moves to 12-0.
Tribe starter
Owen Pierce picked up his first loss of the season, allowing three runs over three innings, striking out a pair of Virginia batters.
Brian Craven and
Rojo Prarie each allowed one earned run in 2.1 innings of relief work.
After the opening two William & Mary players of the game were retired by the UVA starter, Delossantos took the first pitch of his at bat to the opposite field and into the Virginia bullpen for his second homer of the season to get the Tribe on the board 1-0.
UVA would claim the lead in the bottom half of the frame as Jake Gelof and Kyle Teel would hit a pair of back to back RBI doubles. A third run would score on a fielder's choice as the Cavaliers took an early 3-1 edge.
Pierce would settle in, retiring the final six men he faced without surrendering a run, and Craven would work scoreless fourth and fifth innings before Williamson shot his solo bomb to dead center making it a 3-2 game.
The Cavaliers would respond in the bottom half of the sixth, plating three runs, two of them unearned. Virginia added another unearned run to make it 7-2 in the eighth.
Lucas Carmichael would double to lead off the ninth and score, but the Tribe could not push any more men across in the 7-3 defeat.
Up Next: CAA play kicks off this weekend as William & Mary will host conference preseason favorite College of Charleston at Plumeri Park. The Tribe and Cougars will battle Friday, Saturday, and Sunday afternoons in Williamsburg.
