W&M News and Notes

- W&M posted its first win as a No. 8 seed in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament behind its 73-51 victory over Elon on Saturday. The Tribe will look for just its second win over the tournament's top seed on Sunday. W&M last played a No. 1 seed in 2018 in the semifinals against Charleston. The Tribe's lone win over a No. 1 seed in the CAA Tournament was a 56-54 win over VCU in the 2008 semifinals.

- The Tribe and Pride have met in the CAA Tournament on four previous occasions with Hofstra holding a 3-1 advantage. The last two meetings in the 2015 and 2016 semifinals were memorable. W&M topped Hofstra, 92-91, in double OT in 2015 on Daniel Dixon's last-second corner 3-pointer. The Pride returned the favor with a 70-67 win a year later.

- A big key in W&M's second-round win over Elon was its 3-point shooting. The Tribe connected on a program tournament record 14 3-pointers, shooting 43.8% from distance. Overall, the 14 triples ranks second in CAA Tournament history.

- With its 14 3-pointers on Saturday, W&M has connected on double-digit 3-pointers in five of its last 11 games. During its recent 3-game winning streak, the Tribe is averaging 11.3 3-pointers per game and shooting 40% from long range. On the year, W&M ranks second in the CAA and 43rd nationally at 37.1% from 3-point range. The Tribe's 250 3-pointers in 2022-23 rank eighth in school history and are only seven away from sixth place.

- The Tribe also turned in a strong defensive performance in the second round victory over Elon on Saturday. W&M held the Phoenix to just 51 points and 38.2% shooting. It was the second-best defensive scoring performance for W&M in the CAA Tournament behind only the 45 vs. Northeastern in the 2010 semifinals. Leading the charge defensively against Elon was graduate guard Chris Mullins. He held CAA Rookie of the Year Max Mackinnon to a season-low two points on 1-of-4 shooting.

- W&M limited Elon to just 0.84 points per possession on Saturday, which was a season best. Over the last nine games, the Tribe is holding its opponents to just 64.1 points per game. During that stretch, W&M's defensive points per possession number is 1.00, an improvement over its season average. In each of the last three games, all wins, the Tribe limited its opponents to less than 0.9 points per possession. W&M is 10-6 in 2022-23 when it holds opponents to less than 70 points.

-  Senior guard Miguel Ayesa was on fire against Elon, knocking down seven 3-pointers and scoring a career-high 23 points. The seven 3-pointers were the most for a Tribe player in a CAA Tournament game and the second-most all-time in tournament history overall. The seven 3-pointers are also tied for the seventh-best total in W&M history.

- Ayesa has scored in double figures in each of the Tribe's last three games, averaging 17.7 points per game and hitting 5.7 3-pointers per game. He connected on three or more 3-pointers in five of the Tribe's last seven contests. Overall, he ranks 10th in the CAA, averaging 2.0 3-pointers per contest.

- Junior forward Ben Wight continued his strong showing of late with eight points, 13 rebounds and four assists in Saturday's win. Both the rebound and assist totals were career-highs. The 13 rebounds was also the second-best for a Tribe player in CAA Tourney history behind only the 15 from Tim Trout vs. American in 1988. Wight has been on a tear of late, averaging 15.5 points and 6.8 rebounds over the last six games. He ranks in the CAA top 25 in both scoring (11.0) and rebounding (5.2).

- With the Tribe down a pair of starters due to injury, sophomore Matteus Case has moved into the first five over the last six games. During that stretch, he is averaging 10 points and six rebounds per game, while shooting 52.6% from 3-point range (10-of-19). Case has scored in double figures in five of those six games, including a career-high 13 in the win over Monmouth. He had 11 points and seven rebounds in the CAA Second Round win over Elon.

- The Tribe's 22-point victory over Elon in the second round was the program's largest margin of victory in a CAA Tournament in program history.
