W&M News and Notes

- Since Elon joined the CAA in 2014-15, the Tribe is 12-7 against the Phoenix and 7-4 at Elon. Last season, the teams split the series with each winning on its home court.

- W&M leads the CAA and ranks 36th nationally in 3-point % (37.2). The Tribe is averaging 7.3 triples made per game. The Tribe's numbers this season are a substantial improvement from the last two seasons, when W&M shot just 30.1% from distance and made 6.4 per game.

- Graduate guard Anders Nelson has scored 20-plus points on four occasions this season and leads the Tribe in scoring at 11.7 points per contest, which also ranks 21st in the league. Over the last four games, he is shooting 75% (24-of-32) from the field and 76.9% (10-of-13) from 3. He scored a season-high 27 points vs. Stony Brook on Jan. 26 and more impressively was 8-of-8 from the field and 4-of-4 from 3. It marks the most made field goals without a miss for a Tribe player since 2004.

- In short order, sophomore Gabe Dorsey has established himself as one of the top shooters in the country. He ranks ninth nationally in 3-point % (44.4), 25th in 3's per game (3.04) and 25th in effective FG% (64.2). He leads the CAA in both 3-point % and triples per game. He has been even better in league play, hitting 3.3 3-pointers per game and shooting 46.5%. Dorsey's 76 3-pointers this season rank eighth in Tribe history, while his 3.04 per game is third.

- The Tribe averages 21.2 points per game off the bench this season and is outscoring its opponents in bench production (21.2-19.9). The bench scoring average, which ranks fourth in the CAA, is W&M's highest since it averaged 24.5 points per game in 2016-17. The Tribe is also outscoring its opponents in bench points for the first time since 2019-20. In the Gold Rush Game, sophomore Tyler Rice and junior Jake Milkereit provided a lift off the bench with 14 and nine points, respectively.

- Graduate student Chris Mullins scored a season-high 19 points in the Tribe's Gold Rush Game, hitting 5-of-8 from the floor, 2-of-4 from 3 and 7-of-8 at the free throw line. Mullins has enjoyed big performances in CAA play, including a season-high nine assists compared to zero turnovers vs. North Carolina A&T. It is just one of 36 performances nationally this season in which a player had nine or more assists and zero turnovers and the only such effort for a CAA player in 2022-23. In league play, Mullins is averaging three assists per game, which ranks 14th in the CAA.

- In its win over Stony Brook on Jan. 26, W&M set a program record shooting 81.3% (13-of-16) from 3-point range. The 3-point % was also the best by a Division I team this season with a minimum of 10 made 3's and the second best nationally over the last six years. The Tribe followed it up with 12 triples and a 57.1 3-point % at Towson (Jan. 28).

- Junior forward Noah Collier recorded his seventh double-double of the season with career-highs of 22 points and 16 rebounds vs. N.C. A&T on Jan. 21. He ranks third in the CAA and 57th nationally with seven double-doubles. Collier ranks third in the CAA and 82nd nationally at 8.2 rebounds per game. He has pulled down 10 or more rebounds in nine games this season.

- Freshman Charlie Williams was named the CAA Rookie of the Week on Jan. 16. Williams made a huge impact off the bench in the win at UNCW, scoring a career-high 15 points to go with four rebounds. He scored 12 first-half points with the Tribe's starting front court of Collier and Wight limited to 11 total minutes due to foul trouble. Williams was 11-of-12 at the free throw line vs. UNCW.

- Nelson has been a catalyst for W&M's offense. He ranks third in the CAA in assists (4.6) and fourth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.8). His assists per game number is 73rd nationally. Nelson is 15th in the country in assist rate (35.5), according to KenPom.com. Assist rate divides the number of assists by the field goals made by the player's teammates while he is on the court.
- W&M is averaging just 12.5 turnovers per game in 2022-23, which is a significant improvement from a season ago. The Green and Gold averaged 16.2 turnovers per game in 2021-22, the sixth-worst mark in the country. After not having a single game of 10 or fewer turnovers last season, W&M has nine such games this season.

- Four former Tribe standouts are in the NBA as either a player or a coach. 2020 graduate Nathan Knight, who was the National Mid-Major Player of the Year in 2020, signed a two-year deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves in the offseason. He spent last season with the Timberwolves after playing his rookie season with the Atlanta Hawks. Jim Moran '01 is in his second season as an assistant coach with the Detroit Pistons, while Sean Sheldon '16 joined the Utah Jazz as an assistant coach this offseason. Daniel Dixon '17 is an assistant coach with the Oklahoma City Blue, the NBA G-League program of the Oklahoma City Thunder. Another nine former Tribe players are currently playing professionally in Europe.
