W&M News and Notes
 - The Tribe opens the season with back-to-back home games for the second-straight season and 37th time overall. Prior to last season, W&M hadn't opened a year with two-straight home contests since 2005.

- W&M and American are former CAA rivals and founding members of the league. The Tribe and Eagles meet for the fourth time in five years after not having met since AU left the CAA in 2001. The teams have split the last six meetings, but the Eagles won the last two, including last season in Washington, D.C.

- American is the first of two Patriot League teams the Tribe will play this season as W&M also travels to Navy on Dec. 30. It marks the third straight season in which it has played multiple Patriot League teams. The Tribe played two in 2021-22 and last year hosted Navy and Army, while traveling to American.

- Along with proximity and former conference affiliation, the programs have a few more connections on their staffs. Head coaches Dane Fischer and Duane Simpkins were assistants together for four years (2015-19) at George Mason. Former Tribe assistant Nate Bollinger joined Simpkins's staff at American this off-season after spending the previous four years at W&M.

- W&M turned in one of the top defensive performances in Kaplan Arena history on Monday against Regents. The Tribe limited the Royals to a Kaplan Arena record-tying low of 29 points. W&M also held Catholic to 29 points in 1981. The 29 points marked the best defensive performance for a Tribe team since holding Little Creek Amphibious Base to 26 in 1949.

- The Tribe also held Regent to 22.2% (12-of-54) shooting, which was the lowest for a W&M opponent since Washington College shot 20.5% (15-of-73) in 1999.

- Five Tribe players scored in double figures to lead a balanced attack in the win over Regent. Junior Gabe Dorsey led the Tribe with 18 points, while sophomores Chase Lowe and Trey Moss posted career-highs with 13 and 12 points. Graduate student Sean Houpt and junior Matteus Case each chipped in 10 points.

- The Tribe connected on 10 3-pointers in its season-opening win over Regent, marking the 21st time under head coach Dane Fischer that W&M hit double-digit triples in a game. The Green and Gold is 12-9 when making 10 or more 3-pointers under Fischer, including 6-3 over the last two years.

- W&M attempted 33 3-pointers in the season opener, which equaled the most for the Tribe under Fischer. The last time the Green and Gold attempted more 3-pointers in a game it shot 35 at Elon in 2019.

- W&M's 7.5-game improvement in 2022-23 ranked second in the CAA and among the top 30 in the country. The Green and Gold won 13 games last season, including seven in CAA play.

- Junior Gabe Dorsey was one of eight players named to the honorable mention Preseason All-CAA team. In total, he was among 18 recognized by the league during the preseason. One of the top shooters in the country, Dorsey started 25 games last season and finished the year ranked 25th in the CAA at 10.9 points per game. He was fourth in the country shooting 44.4% from 3, averaging a trio of 3-pointers per game.

- Houpt joins the Tribe with a reputation as an elite shooter over his three years at Florida Tech. He scored over 1,000 points and averaged 17 per game for the Panthers in his career. Houpt was a D2CCA All-South Region Second Team pick and an All-SSC Second Team selection after averaging 21 points per game last season. He connected on 176 3-pointers over his career and last season shot 35.7% from long range, while hitting 91 triples.

- Last season, the Tribe excelled beyond the 3-point arc. W&M ranked second in the CAA and 48th nationally in 3-point % a season ago. It's 36.7 3FG% was the 10th best in school history. The Tribe connected on 256 3-pointers in 2022-23, which was the seventh-best total in program history. Over the last 12 games, W&M connected on double-digit 3-pointers on five occasions, including a DI season-high 14 in the CAA Quarterfinal win over Elon.

- 2020 graduate Nathan Knight, who was the National Mid-Major Player of the Year in 2020, signed an NBA 2-way deal with the Boston Celtics prior to the start of the season. He has played 108 games over his three-year NBA career with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Atlanta Hawks, helping both organizations to the playoffs. Knight is the third W&M player, joining Marcus Thornton (Cleveland Cavaliers 10-day contract in 2018) and Daniel Dixon (Boston Celtics preseason Exhibit 10 deal in 2017) to sign an NBA deal since 2017.

- A trio of former W&M players are currently on coaching staffs in the NBA and NBA G-League. Jim Moran '01 is the head coach of the Rip City Remix, which is the G-League affiliate of the Portland Trail Blazers. Sean Sheldon '16 is in his second season as an assistant coach with the Utah Jazz. Daniel Dixon '17 is an assistant coach with the Oklahoma City Blue, the NBA G-League program of the Oklahoma City Thunder.
