W&M News and Notes
- With its victory over American on Thursday, the Tribe is off to a 2-0 start to the season for the second time in the last five seasons and the 35th time in the 119-year history of the program. W&M has started 3-0 on 23 occasions in program history and three times in the last 31 years.

- The Tribe and Revolutionaries are former Southern Conference rivals that competed in the league together from 1941-70. The last time the teams met in 2020, W&M rallied from a 19-point first-half deficit to win in overtime, 85-84, on a Luke Loewe driving lay-up with 12.3 seconds remaining. It was the Tribe's third win in D.C. over GW and first since 1967.

- The Tribe faces an Atlantic 10 Conference opponent for the 15th-straight season and 26th year in the last 28 campaigns. Coupled with its game at Richmond in December, W&M faces multiple A-10 teams in the same season for just the fifth time. The program has downed an A-10 opponent three times in the last five seasons. Head coach Dane Fischer has led the Tribe to two of the program's nine wins against the league.

- Defense has been a key factor to the Tribe's strong start. W&M leads the CAA and ranks among the national leaders in scoring defense (42.5), 3-point % defense (15.6), and field goal % defense (29.8). Those numbers are eighth, 16th, and 31st nationally, respectively.

- Newcomer guards Sean Houpt and Trey Moss have both made an impact to start their Tribe careers. Both scored in double figures in the Tribe's first two games and are two of the four W&M players averaging double-digits on the year. Houpt led the Tribe with 17 points, including 4-of-6 from 3, in the win over American, while Moss scored 10 of his career-high 14 points in the first half. Houpt is second on the team and 22nd in the CAA at 13.5 points per game, while Moss is third and 24th at 13 per contest.

- Junior guard Gabe Dorsey continues to be one of the top shooters in the country. After ranking fourth in the country in 3-point % last season, he is shooting 50% (8-of-16) from distance this season. He ranks third in the CAA and 39th nationally, hitting four 3-pointers per contest. Dorsey leads the Tribe in scoring at 16 points per game, which is also 10th in the CAA.

- W&M turned in one of the top defensive performances in Kaplan Arena history, limiting Regent to a Kaplan Arena record-tying low of 29 points on Nov. 6. W&M also held Catholic to 29 points in 1981. The 29 points marked the best defensive performance since holding Little Creek Amphibious Base to 26 in 1949. The Tribe also held Regent to 22.2% (12-of-54) shooting, which was the lowest for a W&M opponent since Washington College shot 20.5% (15-of-73) in 1999.

- The Tribe connected on 10 3-pointers in its season-opening win over Regent, marking the 21st time under head coach Dane Fischer that W&M hit double-digit triples in a game. The Green and Gold is 12-9 when making 10 or more 3-pointers under Fischer, including 6-3 over the last two years.

- W&M attempted 33 3-pointers in the season opener, which equaled the most for the Tribe under Fischer. The last time the Green and Gold attempted more 3-pointers in a game it shot 35 at Elon in 2019.

- W&M's 7.5-game improvement in 2022-23 ranked second in the CAA and among the top 30 in the country. The Green and Gold won 13 games last season, including seven in CAA play.

- Gabe Dorsey was selected Preseason All-CAA team. In total, he was among 18 recognized by the league during the preseason. One of the top shooters in the country, Dorsey started 25 games last season and finished the year ranked 25th in the CAA at 10.9 points per game.

- Last season, the Tribe excelled beyond the 3-point arc. W&M ranked second in the CAA and 48th nationally in 3-point % a season ago. It's 36.7 3FG% was the 10th best in school history. The Tribe connected on 256 3-pointers in 2022-23, which was the seventh-best total in program history.

- 2020 graduate Nathan Knight, who was the National Mid-Major Player of the Year in 2020, signed an NBA 2-way deal with the Boston Celtics prior to the start of the season. He has played 108 games over his three-year NBA career with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Atlanta Hawks, helping both organizations to the playoffs. Knight is the third W&M player, joining Marcus Thornton (Cleveland Cavaliers 10-day contract in 2018) and Daniel Dixon (Boston Celtics preseason Exhibit 10 deal in 2017) to sign an NBA deal since 2017.

- A trio of former W&M players are currently on coaching staffs in the NBA and NBA G-League. Jim Moran '01 is the head coach of the Rip City Remix, which is the G-League affiliate of the Portland Trail Blazers. Sean Sheldon '16 is in his second season as an assistant coach with the Utah Jazz. Daniel Dixon '17 is an assistant coach with the Oklahoma City Blue, the NBA G-League program of the Oklahoma City Thunder.
