TRIBE NOTES
Last Time Out
W&M (2-6-4, 1-2-2 CAA) earned their third consecutive draw on Tuesday against Commonwealth foe Virginia Tech.
Aidan Morrison gave the Tribe an early lead on the road, converting off a free kick from
Ian Krajna for his second goal of the season. The Hokies were able to equalize the game in the 66
th minute off a penalty kick, before dropping to 10 players moments later due to a red card. Despite having a man advantage, the Tribe were unable to score in the waning moments of the contest.
No Winner, No Loser
The three consecutive ties is the longest draw-streak for the Tribe since 2005 when they battled to three straight 0-0 decisions with James Madison, VCU and Towson in late October of that year. If Saturday's game against Charleston were to end in a draw it would be the first time in program history that the Tribe have played in four consecutive ties. Draws have been more frequent for the Tribe in recent history, with last year's six ties being W&M's most ever in a season.
Watch Out for the Young Bucks
The Green and Gold's two leading point scorers are both underclassmen. Sophomore
Lucas Caldas is pacing the team with four goals and one assist with Morrison just two points behind as a freshman earning two goals and three assists.
Evan Rabush and
Gabe Ruitenberg have had their presence felt in the Tribe attack as freshman as well. Rabush has a pair of goals in his first collegiate season, with Ruitenberg having a goal and assist to his name.
Battling the Big Boys
The Tribe have frequently taken on ACC opponents in recent history. This will be the second match for W&M against an ACC foe this year after playing three such games a season ago. Over those four previous contests the Tribe are 1-2-1 with a win against Wake Forest last year, who was No. 10 at the time.
As Close As They Come
All but one of the Tribe's matches this season have been decided by one goal or less. The lone outlier being a 4-2 loss to nationally ranked New Hampshire in the third game of the year. Despite all the close contests, a lot have been offensive minded matchups with both teams scoring in eight of the Tribe's 12 matches so far in 2023.
Series History
The Tribe have had few issues with Charleston in their all-time series that spans 18 meetings. The Cougars will be searching for their first win against W&M since 2015. Last year's match ended in a 2-2 draw in Charleston. The Cougars will also be searching for their first ever win at Martin Family Stadium, a place where the Tribe are 8-0 against them all time.
William & Mary returns to Chapel Hill for the first time since 2015 to take on the Tar Heels. The all-time series that began in 1971 will see the 21
st edition play out on Tuesday. UNC leads the series 16-2-2. The Tribe's lone win on the road came in 2013 by a 1-0 score. W&M has lost their last four meetings with the Tar Heels.
Scouting the Cougars
Charleston (3-4-5, 1-2-2 CAA) enters the meeting Saturday after a commanding 5-1 non-conference victory against Georgia Southern this week. All five Cougar goals came in the second half of that match, ending a drought of five consecutive halves without a goal for Charleston. They have lost their last two conference matches, coming against Stony Brook and Monmouth, and are in search of their first road victory of the year. A win would give life to either side as they, like W&M, sit on the outside looking in when it comes to the CAA postseason picture.
Scouting the Tar Heels
No. 14 North Carolina (6-1-4, 1-1-3 ACC) will do battle with No. 4 Wake Forest before taking on the Tribe. The Tar Heels only loss on the season is against defending national champion Syracuse on Oct. 6. Quenzi Huerman is the Tar Heel to key in on. The Frenchmen has seven goals and three assists to pace the Tar Heel attack.
