W&M News and Notes

- Saturday is the first of two meetings between W&M and Towson over a 16-day stretch. The Tigers travel to Williamsburg on Feb. 13. The Tribe has won four of the last five games played at Towson. Overall, the Tribe leads the series at 24-21, including wins in six of the last nine meetings.

- The Tribe set a program record shooting 81.3% (13-of-16) from 3-point range in the win over Stony Brook on Thursday. The 3-point % was also the best by a Division I team this season with a minimum of 10 made triples and the second best nationally over the lst six years. The 13 triples were a D1 season-high for W&M. 10 of those 3's came in the opening half, which marked the most in a half for the Green and Gold since 2019. On the year, W&M leads the CAA and ranks 56th nationally at 36.6% from 3.

- Graduate guard Anders Nelson scored a season-high 27 points vs. the Seawolves and more impressively was 8-of-8 from the field and 4-of-4 from 3-point range. It marks the most made field goals without a miss for a Tribe player since 2004, and it marked the 11th occasion in which a Tribe player made four 3-pointers without a miss. Nelson leads the Tribe and ranks 21st in the CAA at 11.5 points per game and has a trio of 20-point games.

- In short order, sophomore Gabe Dorsey has established himself as one of the top shooters in the country. He ranks 10th nationally in 3-point % (45.0), 22nd in 3's per game (3.1) and 18th in effective FG% (65.4). He leads the CAA in 3-point % and is second in triples per game. He has been even better in league play, hitting a CAA-best 3.6 3-pointers per game and shooting a league-leading 48.5%. Over the last three games, he is averaging 17 points per game and making five 3-pointers per contest.

- Junior forward Noah Collier recorded his seventh double-double of the season with career-highs of 22 points and 16 rebounds vs. N.C. A&T on Jan. 21. He is tied for the CAA lead with seven double-doubles on the year and ranks 43rd nationally in the category.

- Collier's 16 rebounds vs. N.C. A&T are the 11th most for a Tribe player since 1973 and the most since Nathan Knight pulled down 17 vs. UNCW in 2020. In CAA play, Collier leads the league at 8.9 rebounds per game. He has pulled down 10 or more rebounds in six of the Tribe's last 10 games and currently ranks 52nd nationally in rebounds per game.

- Graduate student Chris Mullins dished out a season-high nine assists compared to zero turnovers vs. North Carolina A&T. It marks just one of 36 performances nationally this season in which a player had nine or more assists and zero turnovers. It is the only such effort for a CAA player in 2022-23. In league play, Mullins is averaging 3.2 assists per game, which ranks 10th in the CAA.

- Freshman Charlie Williams was named the CAA Rookie of the Week on Jan. 16. Williams made a huge impact off the bench in the win at UNCW, scoring a career-high 15 points to go with four rebounds. He scored 12 first-half points with the Tribe's starting front court of Collier and Wight limited to 11 total minutes due to foul trouble. Williams was 11-of-12 at the free throw line vs. UNCW.

- Nelson has been a catalyst for W&M's offense. He leads the CAA in assists (4.6) and ranks third in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.8). His assists per game number is 73rd nationally. Nelson is 15th in the country in assist rate (35.2), according to KenPom.com. Assist rate divides the number of assists by the field goals made by the player's teammates while he is on the court.

- W&M turned the ball over just nine time against a UNCW team that leads the CAA in turnover margin. On the year, the Tribe is averaging just 12.3 turnovers per game in 2022-23, which is a significant improvement from a season ago. The Green and Gold averaged 16.2 turnovers per game in 2021-22, the sixth-worst mark in the country. After not having a single game of 10 or fewer turnovers last season, W&M has nine such games this season.

- Rebounding, especially on the offensive end, has been a focus for the Tribe. Overall, the Tribe ranks fourth in offensive rebounding (11.1), fifth in the CAA in rebounding margin (+1.9) and sixth in rebounding (34.9). The Tribe's 11.1 offensive rebounds per game are its most since 2006 (12.1).

- Four former Tribe standouts are in the NBA as either a player or a coach. 2020 graduate Nathan Knight, who was the National Mid-Major Player of the Year in 2020, signed a two-year deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves in the offseason. He spent last season with the Timberwolves after playing his rookie season with the Atlanta Hawks. Jim Moran '01 is in his second season as an assistant coach with the Detroit Pistons, while Sean Sheldon '16 joined the Utah Jazz as an assistant coach this offseason. Daniel Dixon '17 is an assistant coach with the Oklahoma City Blue, the NBA G-League program of the Oklahoma City Thunder. Another nine former Tribe players are currently playing professionally in Europe.
